Villan, RL LEARNING OBJECTIVES At the end of the lesson, the student will be able to: a. identify and describe the key parts of a book; b. analyze the function of different book features. FRONTISPIE CErelating to the -An illustration subject matter of a book, it precedes the title page. -In printed books, an unnumber ed i l l us tra ti o n o r pictorial element appearing on the unpaginated verso of the leaf immediately preceding the title page or first page. TITLE PAGE -First important printed page of a book HALF-TITLE PAGE -It precedes the title pa ge a nd serves as a protection for it. - The title of a book as printed, in full or in brief, on the recto of a leaf preceding the title page, usually in a smaller size of the font in which the title proper is printed on the title page BODY -main portion of a book TEXT -Body of the Book BIBLIOGRAP HY -List of the books which the author has used in writing his book, or it may be a list of material which he recommends for further reading. -systematic list or enumeration of written works by a specif ic author or on a given subject INDEX -List of topics discussed in the text, arranged alphabetically with page reference numbers GLOSSARY -A section that list and explains cer tain technical or foreign words -An alphabetically arranged list of the specialized vocabulary of a given subject or f ield of study, with brief definitions. ENDPAPER - a sheet of thick, strong paper folded down the center, one-half of which is pasted to the inside of the front or back board, the other half forming the f ir st or last leaf TABLE OF CONTENTS -L i s t of cha pter s wi th pa ge numbers, serves as outline of the book PREFACE -Introduces the author to the reader and gives his reason for writing the book. - preliminary statement at the beginning of a book -also called foreword or introduction FLYLEAVES -Are blank pages next to the end papers; they are the first and last leaves in the book. SPINE -Binding edge which carries the title, author, publisher and call number of a book. BINDING - H o l d s t h e b o o k t o g e t h e r, protects and makes it easy to handle *SOFT AND HARD APPENDIX -Contain essential materials referred to but not explained in the text. INTRODUCTI ON -Describes the general subject matter and plan of the book IMPRINT -Includes the publisher, place and date of publication COPYRIGHT PAGE -Gives the data of the copyright and the names of the copyright owners DEDICATION PAGE -Bears the names of the person to whom the author dedicates the book VERSO PAGE The back side of a book or the left-hand page of an opening in a book or other publication, usually assigned an even page number. RECTO PAGE The opposite of verso; odd page numbers of the book. THANK YOU!
