MECHANICS BY DR. ADEL MORAD WHAT IS MECHANICS? Mechanics is the study of force, deformation, and motion, and the relations between them. In other words, it is a science concerned with the motion of bodies under the action of forces, including the special case in which a body remains at rest. Of first concern in the problem of motion are the forces that bodies exert on one another. This leads to the study of such topics as gravity, electricity, and magnetism, according to the nature of the forces involved. We care about deformation and motion because we want bodies to move or not move in certain ways in continuum mechanics. SHORT HISTORY OF MECHANICS: Mechanics may be divided into three branches: statics, which deals with forces acting on and in a body at rest; kinematics, which describes the possible motions of a body or system of bodies; and kinetics, which attempts to explain or predict the motion that will occur in a given situation. The discovery of mechanics was made by Nicolaus Copernicus (1473-1543), Johannes Kepler (1571-1630), Galileo Galilei (1564-1642), Sir Isaac Newton (1642-1727), based on the ideas of ancient philosophers Plato (428–348 BC) and Aristotle (384-322 BC).
