**Library -** collection of materials organized for use (Feather and Struges). It denotes a physical space, a building with shelves and so on, containing numbers of books and other reading materials that have been organized for easy access and use. ***RA 9246 --** defines librarian as* an individual who is a bona fide holder of a Certificate of Registration and Professional Identification Card issued by the Professional Regulatory Board for Librarians and by the Professional Regulation Commission in accordance with this Act. **Other definitions of a Librarian** 1. Traditional sense: A librarian played the role of a curator of collections of books and other information materials with the responsibility of providing conditional access to the collection. 2. Modern sense: A librarian plays the role of a manager of the set of information resources being selected and processed according to appropriate collection management and information organization and access policies, and available through a variety of channels to wide range of users -- local and or remote. A librarian is now also a mediator of access to information for various different types of users. 3. According to Gorman: A librarian is a person who performs the following: selection and acquisition of information resources, organization and access, preservation and conservation, user services and training, and management. **Librarianship (Harrod's Librarians Glossary) -** a profession in which members are engaged in the application of appropriate theories, principles, tools and techniques in implementing information-service-related activities, including the collection, preservation organization, management of and access to recorded information. **Library Science (Harrod's Librarians Glossary) -** simply the profession of a librarian. It is an [interdisciplinary](http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Interdisciplinary) field that applies the practices, perspectives, and tools of [management](http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Management), [information technology](http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Information_technology), [education](http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Education), and other areas to [libraries](http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Library); the collection, organization, [preservation](http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Preservation:_Library_and_Archival_Science), and dissemination of information resources; and the [political economy](http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Political_economy) of information. The term **library and information science** (LIS) is often used; most librarians consider it as only a terminological variation, intended to emphasize the scientific and technical foundations of the subject and its relationship with information science. **RELATED TERMS FOR LIBRARY USERS** 1. **Library customers --** users interact with libraries to purchase services 2. **Clients --** emphasizes the relationship between a user and a professional adviser and that the latter owes a kind of duty to the user 3. **Patrons --** term in United Kingdom with American Library Management System but has little common currency among the users themselves. In British English, it carries a meaning of a "sponsor" or "supporter" of a service 4. **Readers --** suggests that the primary purpose of the library is to provide both materials to be read and a place which to read them 5. **Members --** carries a sense of ownership but is less appropriate in some sectors especially where the service has a more commercial edge than others **RELATED TERMS FOR LIBRARY** 1. **Agent --** stressing that the library acts on behalf of the user going out and finding relevant information and repackaging it 2. **Guide --** emphasis on helping the users find useful ways than the information-based and on information access and useful as learning process 3. **Mediator --** carries with it the idea that libraries protect users from wasteness of unstructured resources by interpreting their needs and selectively limiting the materials provided 4. **Broker --** places stress on the use of expertise of work on behalf of a user in order to acquire the product. This includes advertisements and marketing of the library. 5. **Gateway --** suggests that the library acts as an entrance to information sources
