Lecture 3 Importance of Listening Outline 4 Basic Types of Listening 5 Barriers to effective listening 6 How to Listen Effectively? 7 Benefits of Effective Listening Listening is the ability to accurately receive and interpret messages in the communication process. Listening is key to all effective communication, without the ability to listen effectively messages are easily misunderstood. Listening is one of the most important skills you can have. What is An active process of getting information, ideas. listening ? “Listening is the process of receiving, constructing meaning from and responding to spoken. Listening is not just about being quiet while someone else is speaking. 1. What is Listening is with the Mind. Listening? Hearing with the senses. Listening is conscious. Understanding the deeper meaning of what they are saying. 2.Process of Listening 2.Process of Listening Is the intentional focus on hearing a speaker’s message. 1-Receiving This stage is represented by the ear because it is the primary tool involved with this stage of the listening process 2- Understanding In the understanding stage, we attempt to learn the meaning of the message, which is not always easy. Deciding what the message means to you 3- Remembering Remembering begins with listening; if you can’t remember something that was said, you might not have been listening effectively. In this stage an individual not only received a message but also added it to the mind’s bank. The attention is selective, so it is related to our memory what is remembered may be quitr different from what was originally heard. Highly complex messages that are filled with detail call for highly developed listening skill. The fourth stage in the listening process is evaluating. 4- Evaluating evaluations of the same message can vary widely from one listener to another. It is stage in which the active listener participate. The stages two, three, and four are represented by the brain because it is the primary tool involved with these stages of the listening process 5- Responding Responding—sometimes referred to as feedback—is the fifth and final stage of the listening process. Your reaction to the message.
