1 Lecture #01 Research Process/research topic creating research title and thesis statement 2023-2024 Academic year Dr Ketevan MIRZIASHVILI 2 Research Process What is a Research? What is a Research process? "creative and systematic work undertaken to increase the stock of knowledge". 3 Research Process What is a Research process? 4 Research Process Step 1: Choose your topic 5 Research Process Step 2: Identify a problem Research problem is a gap in existing knowledge that you aim to address in your research. Practical problems aimed at contributing to change Theoretical problems aimed at expanding knowledge Why is the research problem important? 6 Research Process Step 3: Formulate research questions A strong research question research question 7 Research question Explanation What effect does social media have on your mind?not correc/ The first question is not specific enough. The second question is more What effect does daily use of Twitter have on the attention span of 12-16 researchable, using qualitative and quantitative data collection. year-olds? Why is there a housing crisis in the Netherlands? Starting with “why” often means that your question is not focused enough: there What impact have university internationalization policies had on the are too many possible answers. By targeting just one specific aspect of the availability and affordability of housing in the Netherlands? problem, the second question offers a clear path for research. Does the US or the UK have a better healthcare system? The first question is too broad and subjective: there’s no clear criteria for what How do the US and the UK compare in health outcomes among low- counts as “better.” The second question is much more researchable. It uses clearly income people with chronic illnesses? defined terms and narrows its focus to a specific population. What should political parties do about low voter turnout in the region? It is generally not feasible for academic research to answer broad normative What are the most effective communication strategies for increasing voter questions. The second question is more specific, aiming to gain an understanding turnout among those under 30 living within city limits? of possible solutions in order to make informed recommendations. 8 Research Process Step 4: Create a research design research design means making decisions about: Your overall research objectives and approach Whether you’ll rely on primary research or secondary research Your sampling methods or criteria for selecting subjects Your data collection methods The procedures you’ll follow to collect data Your data analysis methods Research Process 9 Step 5: Write a research proposal elements: Title page Introduction Literature review Research design Reference list creating research title/ thesis statement 10 Start with a question A thesis is an interpretation of a question or subject, not the subject itself. The subject, or topic What is a research paper title and why does it matter? A research paper title summarizes the aim and purpose of your research study creating research title/ thesis statement 11 your research title should accurately capture what you have done To make the title writing process 5 simple steps 12 Step 2: Identify research study keywords 13 that you have answers to your research questions, find the most important parts of these Now responses and make these your study keywords. Note that you should only choose the most important terms for your keywords–journals usually request anywhere from 3 to 8 keywords maximum. One-sentence answer Title keywords/phrases -program volume “My paper studies how program volume affects -liver transplant patients outcomes for liver transplant patients on waiting -waiting lists lists.” -outcomes “This is a case study.” -case study “I studied 60 cases of liver transplant patients on a -US/age 20-50 waiting list throughout the US aged 20-50 years.” -60 cases “My study revealed a positive correlation between waitlist volume and negative prognosis of transplant -positive correlation between waitlist procedure.” volume and negative outcomes Step 3: Research title writing: use these keywords 14 “We employed a case study of 60 liver transplant patients around the US aged 20-50 years to assess how waiting list volume affects the outcomes of liver transplantation in patients; results indicate a positive correlation between increased waiting list volume and negative prognosis after the transplant procedure.” The sentence above is clearly much too long for a research paper title. This is why you will trim and polish your title in the next two steps. Step 4: Create a working research paper title “We employed a case study of 60 liver transplant patients around the US aged 20-50 years to assess how the waiting list volume affects the outcome of liver transplantation in patients; results indicate a positive correlation between increased waiting list volume and a negative prognosis after transplant procedure” “A case study of 60 liver transplant patients around the US aged 20-50 years assessing the impact of waiting list volume on outcome of transplantation and showing a positive correlation between increased waiting list volume and a negative prognosis” (Word Count: 38) Step 5: Remove any nonessential words and phrases from your title “A case study of 60 liver transplant patients around the US aged 20-50 years assessing the impact of waiting list volume on outcomes of transplantation and showing a positive correlation between increased waiting list volume and a negative prognosis” (Word Count: 19) So what is left is: “Assessing the impact of waiting list volume on outcome and prognosis in liver transplantation patients” (Word Count: 15) Note that the most important terms appear at the beginning and end of the title: “Assessing,” which is the main action of the study, is placed at the beginning; and “liver transplantation patients,” the specific subject of the study, is placed at the end. researchers will be able to locate your article once it is published. Tips on Formulating a Good Research Paper Title Write the title after you’ve written your paper and abstract Include all of the essential terms in your paper Keep it short and to the point (~16 words or fewer) Avoid unnecessary jargon and abbreviations Use keywords that capture the content of your paper Never include a period at the end—your title is NOT a sentence Title :Create an article with the text Practice #01 including any researched information (word/200-250w) p.Keep the standard structure of scientific paper Methodology : Choose the topic Text Should build based on your lecture materials Dr Ketevan MIRZIASHVILI Group #01: Modern dentistry and the new generation Practice #03 Group #02: Modern dentistry and cosmetic aesthetics Group #03: Modern dentistry and new technologies today Group #04: Modern dentistry and art Group #05: Dental problems and fast food Group #06: Aesthetic surgery and society Group #07: Digital technology in children's lives Group #08: Books and digital books in learning Group #09: Violent video games and the young generation Group #010: Vaccinations should be compulsory Group #011: The environment and society Group #012: We should shut down zoom?
