Digital Transformation in Healthcare Lect_3 Topics in this Lecture Healthcare Data Types Healthcare Data Sources Healthcare Data Capture Why is health data important? Utilization Methods of Healthcare Data Digital Transformation in Healthcare Data Healthcare data Types The healthcare institution collects, so many different types of data Electronic health records, Examination results Medical images Administrative data, Laboratory results, Research data, Data is collected and stored to be reviewed, processed analyzed, and referenced for many reasons. Healthcare data Sources Patient data from hospital and primary care administration data (e.g. dates and times of appointments) through to information about treatment, medical, and diagnostic tests. Data from blood or tissue samples which can be used to derive genetic information Data from images, which include x-rays, MRI, and CT images that contain a huge amount of information Health and fitness devices, provide data on things like heart rate, activity, and calories. Studies or screening of groups of people’s health, which may be based on a particular health condition (e.g. cancer), or issues that affect the health of people (e.g. smoking). Healthcare Data Capture Data entry includes gathering and inputting information for reporting, tracking, or collection purposes. It also requires a lot of hands-on work, even in the digital era. Data capture, on the other hand, uses automation, artificial intelligence, and other new and developing technologies to automatically capture data, without the need for human interaction. Automated data capture can improve accuracy, efficiency, and effectiveness of data. Data capture in healthcare requires many steps and is very detailed, while also protecting sensitive patient information and following specific rules and regulations such as HIPAA compliance. Why is health data important? Health data helps us to Better understanding of diseases and conditions, their causes, prevalence, and symptoms Provide new ways of treating them or spotting them earlier. Improve our knowledge of healthcare Helped to solve challenging health problems. Utilization Methods of Healthcare Data Improve performance of health systems – for example, detecting unacceptable variation in healthcare provision. Identify disease early – for example, machine learning technology has been used on thousands of eye scans to identify signs of eye disease and recommend how patients should be referred for care Diagnose rare diseases – for example, pinpointed the underlying genetic changes responsible for conditions in many patients. Study the effects of immunization – for example, proving that the MMR vaccine is not associated with autism. Assess the safety of medical interventions – for example, finding the transfusions of blood from people who go on to develop cancer do not increase the risk of cancers in the blood recipients pinpoint Utilization Methods of Healthcare Data Make connections between disease and lifestyle choices – for example, establishing the link between smoking and cancer Predictive Analytics, predicting public health trends, including how patients may react to certain treatments. Personnel Management, Improper management can have damaging effects on the patient experience and ultimately can be the reason you lose patients. Fraud Prevention, allowing both patients and physicians to have full transparency to their data in a secure format. Digital Transformation in Healthcare? Today’s healthcare system operates disconnectedly, with health plans, hospital systems, pharmaceutical companies, and medical device users functioning separately. Digital transformation is a new way to deliver care, improve processes, and meet the wellbeing needs of consumers. Digital health is a broader category, including mobile health (mHealth), Health Information Technology (HIT), wearable devices, telehealth, telemedicine, and personalized medicine. An example could be a heart rate monitor or a smartwatch connected to a mobile app. Digital Transformation Journey what is the Outlook for the Future? The healthcare sector will be much more connected, with interoperable and secure technology powered by AI. This technology, will use consumer data to “help identify illness early, enable proactive intervention, and improve the understanding of disease progression.” The future of healthcare is undeniably digitized
