ETHICS Informed Consent: Legal concept that provides that a patient has the right to know the potential risks, benefits and alternatives of a proposed procedure prior to undertaking a course of treatment. Liability: As it relates to damages, an obligation one has incurred or might incur through a negligent act Malpractice: Professional misconduct, improper discharge of professional duties, or failure to meet the standard of care of a professional that results in harm to another; the negligence or carelessness of a professional person such as a nurse, pharmacist, physician [dentist], or accountant. Ethics: A set of principles of right and wrong conduct, a theory or system of moral values, of what is right and what is wrong. Ethics is a system of values that guides behaviors in relationships among people in accordance with certain social roles Civil Rights Act: A 1964 law prohibiting the practice of racial discrimination by any organization or agency receiving money under any program supported by the Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS). This includes all 'providers of service' receiving federal funds under Medicare legislation. Employment at will: A legal doctrine providing that employment is at the will of either the employer or the employee. The employer or employee may termination employment for any or no reason, unless there is a contractual agreement in place that specifies the terms and duration of employment. INSURANCE Malpractice or Professional Lability: coverage protects against financial loss as a result of malpractice, errors, and negligence General Business Liability: coverage protects against financial loss as the result of bodily injury, property damage, medical expenses, libel, slander, defending lawsuits, and settlement bonds or judgments Worker’s compensation: Benefits paid by the employer to cover employee medical costs and a percentage of lost wages due to workplace injury or work related illness. For certain employers, required by federal and state law (TN: 5 employees or more) Disability (Short or Long term): Purchased by the employee or as an employer benefit that replaces a percentage of wages during work time lost due to injury or illness for a specific length of time. Commercial building or property: This coverage protects your business against loss and damage to company property due to a wide variety of events. These include fire, smoke, wind and hailstorms, civil disobedience and vandalism
