Training What is ? DEFINITION OF LEADERSHIP is the art of a motivating group of people to act toward achieving a common goal. Bass (1981) Leadership is an “influence”. Environment Situation Leader Followers The System View of Leadership NATURE OF LEADERSHIP 1. Leadership and motivation are interconnected. 2. The essence of leadership is followership. 3. Leader must coexist with the subordinates or followers. 4. Leadership is concerned with values. LEADERSHIP AND THE USE OF POWER Power is the ability to influence the behavior of others to bring about desired outcomes. CLASSIFICATIONS OF POWER 1. Legitimate Power – (position power) It is delegated from a higher authority in formal organizations. 2. Referent Power – (charismatic power) It comes from the personal qualities of a leader. 3. Expert Power – (knowledge power) This arises from a person's specialized knowledge and information about certain situations. QUALITIES OF A GOOD LEADER 1. Determination - A good leader has never- ending determination. He is the first one to initiate an idea and the last one to give up. It is because of a leader's determination that projects are completed. QUALITIES OF A GOOD LEADER 2. Flexibility - A good leader can adapt to any situation. 3. Resourcefulness - Leaders don't always get what they want easily but they are creative. QUALITIES OF A GOOD LEADER 4. Creativity.Thinking of effective ways of doing things that don't require a lot of time, effort or money. 5. Self-confidence.People will follow a leader who believes in him or herself. QUALITIES OF A GOOD LEADER 6. Positive Attitude / Optimism. A great leader has a positive outlook and tries to make the best out of everything. 7. Responsibility. A great leader understands that whatever happens in his team (whether good or bad) is his responsibility. QUALITIES OF A GOOD LEADER 8. Good Communication Skills. What makes a leader great is his ability to communicate effectively with his team. 9. Consistency / Reliability / Accountability. A good leader is dependable, always does his/her best, takes action & delivers good results. QUALITIES OF A GOOD LEADER 10. Planning Ahead. A good leader plans and knows what is up ahead. 11. Patience. Having the responsibility needs patience in all aspects. QUALITIES OF A GOOD LEADER 12. Being Objective. A good leader does not take sides but is open to different opinions. 13. Perceptive. A good leader has an awareness of the people he is leading. A good leader knows himself, his abilities and limitations. GUIDELINES TO ACHIEVE LEADERSHIP 3. Learn to follow A good leader has no problem in yielding control to another person when appropriate. Develop situational awareness. A good leader can see the bigger picture and anticipate problem before it occurs. GUIDELINES TO ACHIEVE LEADERSHIP 6. Inspire and empower your teammates. Keep learning. Learning process doesn’t end after you graduated from schooling. A good leader is never outdated and always keeps learning new things. GUIDELINES TO ACHIEVE LEADERSHIP 8. Learn to adjust to change. We live in a changing world, so our way of life often changes. PRINCIPLES OF LEADERSHIP 1. Take responsibility of your action regardless of the outcome. 2. Set the example. 3. Know yourself and make self- improvement. 4. Seek responsibility and develop a sense of responsibility. 5. Ensure that the task is understood. PRINCIPLES OF LEADERSHIP 6. Know your men and look out for their welfare. 7. Keep your men always informed. 8. Train your men as a team. 9. Employ your command on the right time and place. 10.Know your job thoroughly. LEADERSHIP STYLE Leadership style is a leader's method of providing direction, implementing plans, and motivating people. LEADERSHIP STYLE 1. Autocratic Leaders Centralize power and decision making in themselves. The leaders take full authority and assume full responsibility but expect discipline, obedience and compliance from members. Authority Leader Follower LEADERSHIP STYLE 2. Participative Leaders also called democratic leaders. Share power and authority with the members of the group. Decisions are not unilateral because they arise from consultation with followers and participation by them. Authority Leader Followers LEADERSHIP STYLE 3. Laizze’s faire or Free-rein Leaders avoid power and responsibilities. They depend largely upon the group members train themselves and provide their own motivation. The leaders play only minor roles.
