Latitude & Longitude Basics KAP World Geography Latitude lines run horizontally and are also known as parallels. Zero degrees is the Equator. 90° north is the North Pole and 90° south is the South Pole. Longitude lines run vertically and are also known as meridians. Zero degrees is the Prime Meridian. Going 180° E and 180° W they meet and form the International Dateline. The Equator: 0° Latitude Divides the earth into NORTH & SOUTH hemispheres. The Prime Meridian: 0° Longitude Divides the earth into WESTERN & EASTERN hemispheres. Latitudes LOW Latitudes are found between 0° and 30° latitude ○ Climates in this region are warm year round. Where would this be in the Southern LOW hemisphere? Latitudes MID Latitudes are found between 30° and 60° latitude. ○ Climates in this regions experience both warm and cold temperatures throughout the year. Where would this be in the Southern hemisphere? LOW MID Latitudes HIGH Latitudes are found between 60° and 90° latitude. ○ Climates in this regions are primarily cold year round. Where would this be in the Southern LOW hemisphere? MID HIGH 90°N 60°N HIGH 30°N MID 0° LOW LOW 30°S MID 60°S 90°S HIGH Tropic of Cancer & Capricorn Tropic of Cancer is located at 25.5°N Tropic of Capricorn is located at 25.5°S Why do we care? Between these latitude lines, the Earth receives direct sunlight all year, meaning they have warm climates. REMEMBER! LINES OF LATITUDE NEVER TOUCH! LINES OF LONGITUDE CONVERGE AT THE POLES! What does converge mean? Meet, intersect, cross, touch etc.
