Separating mixtures Imagine you have a mixture of sand, iron nails and plastic beads. How might you separate them? Think about the properties of each substance. Magnetism What materials can a magnet be used to separate? Magnetism Not all metals are magnetic, only iron, nickel and cobalt. Other metals which are alloys of these metals are also magnetic. Ferrous metals are metals which contain iron like steel and tin eg steel is made from iron and carbon. This is useful if you want to separate aluminum cans from steel cans, only the steel cans will be attracted to the magnet. Or separate iron pipes from copper pipes, only the iron will be attracted to the magnet https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nvJFFIzAwqI In this short 1 min clip we can see how magnets are used to sort through mixed recyclable products Magnets are also useful in a scrap yard to separate iron from wood and other materials eg rubber car tyres The iron can be melted down and made into new products https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ugv3safACeE Here the magnet is being used to move steel from a truck into the scrap pile This is a special type of magnet called an electromagnet which means that electricity is used to create the magnetic field and so the magnetism can be turned on, to pick up the metal and move it, then turned off, to drop the metal in a new location. Magnets and food standards When crops are harvested, there are many points of entry for metal contamination to enter the product stream. Metal contamination can take many forms, ranging from a broken piece of harvesting equipment, to a screw, to a tiny metal shaving. This is of great concern, as metals parts can go on to cause damage to other equipment in the processing of the grain in the mills. The cost of repairs, replacement parts and downtime can be devastating for a manufacturing facility. Similarly, if product reaches the consumer with metal contamination still present, the manufacturer’s brand reputation will be severely compromised, and manufacturers will often be met with costly recalls. https://buntingmagnetics.com/industries/food/ This conveyor belt has magnets and detects if food has metal contaminants inside Magnetism- notes Not all metals are magnetic, only i_____, nickel and cobalt, s______ and tin Magnets are useful in recycling centers to separate s______ drink cans from aluminum drink cans, cardboard, glass and plastic. Magnets are useful in scrap yards to unload waste s_____ from trucks into the scrap pile. In these ways magnets are used to collect metals so they can be re-used, as metals are a valuable and finite resource. Magnets are also used as part of quality control measures in the food production industry, identifying and removing unwanted magnetic metals at various stages of the process A magnet would be useful to separate the s______ paperclips in your pencil case out from any pencil wood shavings
