What is Evolution? Year 10 Evolution What is Evolution? Evolution is a process of gradual change that takes place over many generations, during which living things slowly change some of their characteristics. This may mean that the way they look or behave or act has changed to help them suit their environment better. Does this really show evolution? Squirtle Wartortle Blastoise Evolution as Theory and Fact Confusion sometimes arises as to whether Evolution is a theory or a fact. Actually it is both! The theory of Evolution deals with how Evolution happens. Our understanding of this process is always changing. Evolution is also a fact as there is a huge amount of indisputable evidence for its occurrence. Rodin’s “The Thinker” Types of Evolution There are three main areas of change that have significantly affected human populations over time, resulting in the transformation of our hominin ancestors into modern humans: Biological Evolution: occurs through genetic variation and reproduction, and involves the transfer of genes from one generation to the next Cultural Evolution: occurs through the development of customs and languages, and involves the transfer of information either within a generation or across many generations Technological Evolution: refers to the changes over time in technology that give humans increased control over their environment These three factors are all interrelated, a change to one may precipitate a change in another factor. Biological vs Cultural Evolution Technological Evolution Types of Biological Evolution A. Divergent Evolution-when selective pressures cause two species to form (humans from apes) B. Convergent Evolution-takes place when species of different ancestry begin to share similar traits because of a shared environment or other selection pressure (like whales and fish). C. Co-evolution- organism of different species but have a close relationship and evolve together (bees and flowers)
