LAYERS OF THE EARTH OBJECTIVE identify the characteristics of the different layers of the earth LET'S PLAY! Interpret the riddles presented to them and explain the relation of the riddle to the layers of the earth. Riddle 1 A long time ago they thought I was flat, but come to find out they were wrong about that. My shape is not a circle but a sphere, but some people don’t even care. The blue and green that you see is only the top but underneath lies three layers you cannot spot. Who Am I? EARTH Riddle 2 When it comes to planet Earth, I am the first layer on me, you can find lots and lots of players. You may not know my name. But the bottom of the pizza is the same. Who Am I? CRUST Riddle 3 I am the second layer of this planet we live on. I am the thickest found way under your lawn. My name is also used to describe a type of coat you wear. Guess my name, try it if you dare. Who Am I? MANTLE Riddle 4 The last two layers have on last name, But I guarantee you we are not the same. I cover the other one, and I’m not as hot However, when it comes to volcanoes I know the right spot. Who Am I? OUTER CORE Riddle 5 Last but not least, I may be small but deadly, If you come anywhere close I will burn you up readily. I am made up of nickel and iron, Come to the center of the Earth if you think I’m lying. Who Am I? INNER CORE Journey to the Center of the Earth Things to bring: Map Flashlight Notebook (for note keeping) Heat resistant camera (if you want to take your selfies down there) Food and water Extra clothes (those that do not burn easily) Extra courage I’m the MAP… I’m the MAP! ITINERARY: THE EARTH’S LAYERS COMPOSITIONAL MECHANICAL LAYERS LAYERS CRUST LITHOSPHERE MANTLE ASTHENOSPHERE CORE MESOSPHERE OUTER CORE INNER CORE Think of the layers of the Earth like the layers of a cake. ARE YOU READY? Carousel Brainstorming MECHANICS You will work in triads. Assign a secretary, a facilitator and a timekeeper among the members. Each member will work on the assigned layer to them: Member 1- Crust Member 2- Mantle Member 3- Core You have 1 minute to write as many facts/ information as possible you know about the layer assigned to you. MECHANICS After 1 minute, you will move on to the next layer. After completing all the layers, each group will create their own definition of the layers of the earth based on their collated ideas. Make an illustration of the layers of the earth with the appropriate colors and write the most essential function of each layer in the box. Mechanics: 1. You will work in triads. 2. Assign a secretary, a facilitator and a timekeeper among the members. 3. Each member will work on the assigned layer to them: Member 1- Crust Member 2- Mantle Member 3- Core 4. You have 1 minute to write as many facts/information you know about the layer assigned to you. 5. After 1 minute, you will move on to the next layer. 6. After completing all the layers, each group will create their own definition of the layers of the earth based from their collated ideas. CRUST Thinnest layer of the Earth that ranges from only 2 miles in some areas of the ocean floor to 75 miles deep under mountains Made up of large amounts of silicon and aluminum Two types of crust: OCEANIC CRUST AND CONTINENTAL CRUST TYPES OF CRUST CONTINENTAL CRUST OCEANIC CRUST 40 and 70 km thick only about 5 km thick made of granite, less dense made of basalt, very dense most is above sea level below sea level The crust makes up Earth’s crust is like the 1% of the Earth. skin of an apple It is very thin compared to the other three layers. MANTLE The mantle is the layer below the crust. The mantle is the largest layer of the Earth. Thickest layer of the Earth (making up 70% of the Earth’s mass) The mantle is divided into two regions: the upper and lower sections. MANTLE REGIONS OF MANTLE UPPER MANTLE LOWER MANTLE The region just below the Middle layer crust and extending all the way down to the Earth's Very thick layer core is called the mantle. Molten rocks are fluid and This is where magma is moving tin a circular motion called the stored. convection current Molten rocks in the asthenosphere is rigid. OUTER CORE The core of the Earth is like a ball of very hot metals. The outer core is liquid. The outer core is made up of melted iron and nickel and is very dense. INNER CORE Solid sphere composed mostly of iron Heat in the core is probably generated by the radioactive decay of uranium and other elements What do these two images tell us about the layers of the Earth? Temperature increases as depth increases Look at the information in the graph and table below. What’s the relationship between depth and density/pressure? Density and Pressure increase as depth increases QUESTIONS? MUDDIEST POINT Write the most confusing point of the lesson.
