INTRODUCTION TO SCIENCE, TECHNOLOGY AND SOCIETY EARL STEPHEN MANALO, LPT Instructor, GE 7 - Science Technology and Society (STS) Pamantasan ng Lungsod ng Valenzuela LEARNING OBJECTIVES At the end of the discussion, the students should be able to: Discuss the concept of Science. Elaborate the relationship of Science, Technology and Society. Articulate the impacts of Science and Technology on Society, Philippine Society Science, Technology and Society. THE CONCEPT OF SCIENCE There are many ways for us to conceptual Science; Literature definition of Science: “The observation, identification, description, experimental investigation, and theoretical explanation of natural phenomena.” - The American Heritage Dictionary of the English Language (2004) THE CONCEPT OF SCIENCE Cultural definition of Science: “A human endeavor within which people try to make sense of the environment and a worldview that is built around practices that purport to guide the individual towards personal understanding.” - Watters and Diezmann (2003) THE CONCEPT OF SCIENCE Historical perspective definition of Science: “A human endeavor within which people try to make sense of the environment and a worldview that is built around practices that purport to guide the individual towards personal understanding.” - Watters and Diezmann (2003) THE CONCEPT OF SCIENCE Social Language perspective definition of Science: “Based on specific concepts such as energy, mass, entropy; it involves the development of models that provide accounts of phenomena in the natural world; and it is characterized by key epistemological features such as the development of theories. - Scott, Asoko, and Leach THERE ARE MANY WAYS TO DEFINE SCIENCE, FOR BS SOCIAL WORKER STUDENTS, HOW DO YOU DEFINE SCIENCE? HOW CAN SCIENCE BE DEFINED? 1. It is an idea. It comprises ideas, beliefs, theories, and all systematic reasons and observations on the natural and physical world. HOW CAN SCIENCE BE DEFINED? 2. It is a subject in basic education, a discipline or a field of study in higher education that deals with the process of teaching and learning about natural and physical world. That is why it is called as School of Science. HOW CAN SCIENCE BE DEFINED? 4. It is an intellectual activity. It incorporates a methodical and applied study of the natural and physical world that involves observation and experimentation. THE CONCEPT OF TECHNOLOGY It comes from the Greek word ‘techne’ which means art, skills, or crafts, & ‘logos’ which means word, thought, principle, or speech. The application of scientific knowledge to the practical aims of human life or, as it is sometimes phrased, to the change and manipulation of the human environment. EXAMPLES OF TECHNOLOGY 1. Personal Computers and Laptops 2. The Internet 3. Mobile Phones 4. Global Positioning System (GPS) 5. Fiber Optics 6. Social Media Platforms 7. E-Commerce Platforms 8. Cloud Computing 9. Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning 10.Blockchain Technology ROLE OF SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY 1. Alter the way people live, connect, communicate and transact with profound effects on economic development. 2. Key drivers to development because technological and scientific revolutions underpin economic advances, improvements in health systems, education and infrastructure. ROLE OF SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY 3. The technological revolutions of the 21st century are emerging from entirely new sectors, based on microprocessors, telecommunications, biotechnology and nanotechnology ROLE OF SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY 4. Products are transforming business practices across the economy as well as the lives of all who have access to their effects. The most remarkable breakthrough will come from the interaction of insights and applications arising when these technologies converge. ROLE OF SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY 5. Have the power to better the lives of poor people in developing countries. 6. Differentiators between countries that are able to tackle poverty effectively by growing and developing their economies and those that are not. ROLE OF SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY 7. Engine growth. 8. Interventions for cognitive enhancement, proton cancer therapy and genetic engineering among others. THE CONCEPT OF SOCIETY The sum total of our interactions as humans, including the interactions that we engage in to figure things out and to make things. A group of individuals involved in persistent social interactions or a large social group sharing the same geographical or social territory, typically subject to the same political authority and dominant culture expectations. EFFECTS OF S & TO THE SOCIETY 1. By making life easier, science has given man the chance to pursue societal concerns such as ethics, aesthetics, education, justice to create cultures and to improve human conditions. EFFECTS OF S & TO THE SOCIETY 2. Science influences society through its knowledge and world view. Scientific knowledge and the procedures used by scientist influence the way many individuals in society think about themselves, other and the environment. The effect of science on society is neither entirely beneficial or entirely detrimental. STS RELATIONSHIP The central premise of STS SCIENCE is to help students develop the knowledge, skills and effective qualities to take responsible citizenship action on science and SOCIETY TECHNOLOGY technology oriented issues.
