L#4.05 ENERGY FOR ELECTRICITY(1) Todays presentation on: Thermal power stations Content: Introduction Working principle Block diagram of what happens in a thermal power station Main equipments Waste generated and their control Advantages and dis advantages References 1 Teacher: Mr. Haseeb Rahman 2 Teacher: Mr. Haseeb Rahman 3 Thermal power stations: A coal-fired power station produces heat by burning coal in a steam boiler. The steam drives a steam turbine and generator that then produces electricity. The waste products of combustion include ash, sulfur dioxide, nitrogen oxides, and carbon dioxide. Most is lost as thermal energy in the cooling water and waste gases. For example, the efficiency of a typical coal- burning power station is only about 35% , in other words only about 35 % of the energy in its fuel is transformed into electrical energy. The diagram below shows what happens to the rest: 24 List of Thermal power plants in Saudi Arabia 25 26 27 Part of a thermal power plants the large, round towers with clouds of steam coming from them are cooling towers. 28 How does a nuclear power station work? In nuclear power plants, neutrons collide with uranium atoms, splitting them.... In the core of nuclear reactors, the fission of uranium atoms releases energy that heats water to about 520 degrees Fahrenheit. This hot water is then used to spin turbines that are connected to generators, producing electricity. 29 How is nuclear fission used in nuclear power plants? Nuclear power plants use heat produced during nuclear fission to heat water. In nuclear fission, atoms are split apart to form smaller atoms, releasing energy. The heat produced during nuclear fission in the reactor core is used to boil water into steam, which turns the blades of a steam turbine. 30
