JOYCE FITZPATRICK LIFE PERSPECTIVE RHYTHM MODEL JOYCE FITZPATRICK, RN, PhD, FAAN (1944; 76 yrs old) "As clinicians, nurses intervene on a daily basis to help individuals understand the meanings that are significant in their lives, and assist them to grow and learn from life experiences, no matter how traumatic or pervasive the stress and suffering". (Fitzpatrick, J. 2008) 2 OVERVIEW The process of human development is characterized by rhythms that occur within the context of continuous person-environment interaction. Nursing activity focuses on enhancing the developmental process toward health. A central concern of nursing science and the nursing profession is the meaning attributed to life as the basic understanding of human existence. The identification and labeling of concepts allows for recognition and communication with others, and the rules for combining those concepts permits thoughts to be shared through language. 33 METAPARADIGMS P E RS O N - H EA LT H - NURSING-ENVIRONMENT Add a Footer 4 PERSON Integrates the concepts of both self and others, and recognizes individuals as having unique biological, psychological, emotional, social, cultural, and spiritual attitudes. They thrive on honor and dignity, self-evaluation and growth and development. 5 HEALTH OPTIMUM HEALTH A dynamic state of being that results The actualization of both innate and from the interaction of person and obtained human potential gleaned the environment. Nursing practice centers on the application of this body of knowledge in an effort to maintain, restore, or enhance the interactions between people and their environment. 7 RHYTHM MODEL INCLUDES FOUR CONTENT CONCEPTS 1. METAPARADIGM It refers to the transitions through basic metaparadigm concepts of person, environment, health and nursing. 10 Complex nursing model which contribute to nursing knowledge FITZPATRICK’S RHYTHM MODEL by providing taxonomy for identifying and labeling nursing concepts to allow for their universal recognition and communication with others. Taxonomies of nursing diagnoses, interventions, and outcomes provide an anchoring framework for nursing knowledge. Considered a primary basis for the development of the substantive structure of the discipline (nursing). 11 SCIENCE OF UNITARY HUMAN BEINGS IN NURSING PRACTICE Fitzpatrick incorporated Rogers’ (1983) postulated correlates of human development as the basis for differentiation, organizing, and ordering life’s reality. Rogers’ correlates of shorter, higher frequency waves that manifest shorter rhythms and approach as seemingly continuous pattern serve as Fitzpatrick’s foci for hypothesizing the existence of rhythmic patterns. 12 Fitzpatrick presented a rhythm model for the field of inquiry for nursing. A developmental model that proposes that the process of human development is characterized by rhythms. Differences in behavioral manifestations are more easily identified during the peaks and troughs of particular human rhythms throughout the developmental process. There are patterns within a pattern or overall life patterns. Life’s pattern continues toward timelessness, becoming more dominant as one’s development occurs. 13 13 MEANING is viewed as the central component of the human experience and is necessary to enhance and maintain life. 14 THANK YOU Any questions? 15
