**Study Guide -- General Science & Technology Test (2024)** - Know that the process of scientific inquiry is about [exploring the natural and human-made world], [asking questions], and [searching for answers] that increase our [understanding] of the world around us. - Observations are [evidence] gained by the five senses: touch, smell, taste, hearing, and seeing. - Know that sharing knowledge is an important part of science and can: lead to new discoveries, help scientists solve new problems, prevent similar problems from happening again, lead to new inventions, inspire other scientists to explore a topic further, and possibly change people's behaviour and public policy. - Know that a [scientific law] ***describes*** a commonly occurring natural event in detail but does not explain why it happens, and that a [scientific theory] ***provides explanations*** of our observations helping us understand why something happens. A scientific law isn't a never changing truth, and a scientific theory isn't a guess. Both are based on a mountain of evidence and are accepted as our best understanding of something. - Know that technology refers to all sorts of [devices] and [processes] that [help solve problems], [make life easier], or [meet human needs and desires]. - Be able to provide [two] devices **and** [two] processes that are examples of technology that are not electronic or contain computer components. - Be able to show a full understanding of the costs, benefits, and risks for a technology of your choice using specific examples. Think of all the stages in creating technology (extraction of raw resources, refining raw materials, creating parts, assembling parts, distribution of product, sale of product, use of the product, and finally disposal). At any stage there may be financial (salaries, equipment, overhead, cost of production), social, health, legal, and environmental costs depending on the technology you choose. Benefits include the obvious use of the technology, but also the salaries for workers involved, profits for the companies, and the value to the economy. Risks can be accidents, exposure to chemicals, financial, or misuse of the technology. - Be able to explain how technology relies on science, and how science relies on technology using specific examples. You can use the one in your notes, one we discussed in class, or your own example. - Know that scientists conduct investigations to: - describe the world around them - classify objects found in the world - test their ideas about the natural and human-made world
