CEBU TECHNOLOGICAL UNIVERSITY – MAIN CAMPUS COLLEGE OF ENGINEERING DEPARTMENT OF CIVIL ENGINEERING Engineering Management BES-EM Prepared by: Leo Nhel D. Abao, CE What is ENGINEERING? Solve technical problems Application of theories/principles to solve problems Trade-offs between safety, economy, performance, serviceability Efficient application of resources Engineering is the application of science for human benefit. ENGINEERING = PROBLEM SOLVING What problems are included within the scope of engineering? What is an ENGINEER? Middle English word Enginour meaning “one who designs, constructs, or operates military works for attack or defence, etc.; machine designer”. a person who is trained in or follows as a profession a branch of engineering. According to the first issue of the English Journal of Engineering (1866): ❖ The art of directing great sources of power in nature, for the use and convenience of man. The Accrediting Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET) gives the modern definition for engineering: ❖ The profession in which a knowledge of the mathematical and natural sciences gained by study, experience, and practice is applied with judgment to develop ways to utilize, economically, the materials and forces of nature for the benefit of mankind. Engineering is also defined as: Application of mathematical and scientific principles to planning, design, construction, operation, and maintenance of products, systems, etc. that serve mankind. Includes the management of such activities, research and development, and the education of persons who will be responsible for these activities. Therefore we can say that engineering is an art, profession, and a discipline. Art: Engineering often involves creative problem-solving and design. Profession: Engineering is a recognized profession with specific standards, ethical codes, and educational requirements. Discipline: Engineering is a discipline that involves the application of scientific and mathematical principles to solve problems. It is a systematic field of study with its own theories, methodologies, and practices. Engineering problems encompass a wide range of challenges that engineers face in their work. These problems can be categorized into several broad areas: Design and development Analysis and optimization Testing and evaluation Maintenance and repair Sustainability and environmental impact Social and ethical considerations Economic considerations Source: Engineering management | PPT (slideshare.net)
