Field of Dental Medicine Dental Medicine Program Lecture : (Introduction and Terminology) Dr : (Mohammed Hassan) Date : 3 /10 /2023 CONTENTS  Terminology  Purpose of RPDS  Indications for RPDS  Contraindications for RPDS  Advantages of removable over fixed partial dentures  Components of RPD Terminology Prosthetics: The art and science of replacing absent body parts. Prosthesis: Artificial replacement of an absent part of the human body Prosthodontics or dental prosthetics: The branch of dental art and science that pertains to the replacement of missing teeth and oral tissues to restore and maintain oral form, function, appearance and health. e Removable Partial Denture, R.P.D Fixed bridge Implant Removable prosthodontics Dentulous Patients Patients having a complete set of natural teeth Edentulous Patients Patients having all their teeth missing Partially Edentulous Patients Patients having one or more but not their entire natural teeth missing. Edentulous Patients COMPLETE DENTURE Partially Edentulous Patients Removable Partial Denture (RPD) Removable dental prosthesis (appliance) replacing one or more natural teeth and associated oral structures Free End Edentulous Area (Distal extension edentulous area): An edentulous area, which has an abutment tooth on one side only Bounded Edentulous Area: An edentulous area, which has an abutment tooth on each end Abutment: A tooth, a portion of a tooth, or that portion of a dental implant that serves to support and/or retain prosthesis PURPOSE OF REMOVABLE PARTIAL DENTURE Preservation of the remaining teeth and tissues 1-preventing A. Drifting and rotation of remaining teeth B. Continuous eruption of unopposed teeth C. Overclosure and protrusion of the mandible D. Trauma to the oral mucosa E. Facial or temporomandibular joint pain Overeruption (supereruption) Drifting and rotation of teeth. Continuous eruption of unopposed teeth Trauma to the oral mucosa Facial or temporomandibular joint pain, result from occlusal derangement 2- Improve masticatory function Before treatment After treatment 3-Improve esthetics Before After 4- Restoration of speech 5- Psychological benefits INDICATIONS FOR REMOVABLE PARTIAL DENTURES 1- No abutment tooth posterior to edentulous space (Free end edentulous area) 2- Long edentulous bounded span, too extensive for fixed restoration 3- Periodontally weak teeth not sufficiently sound to support fixed- partial denture. 4- Excessive loss of residual bone, the use of labial flange or need to restore lost tissues. Excessive loss of residual bone With excessive loss of residual bone, space is seen under the pontic. Enhancing esthetics in anterior region HOW ???? INDICATIONS FOR REMOVABLE PARTIAL DENTURES 5- After recent extraction. 6- Need of bilateral bracing (cross arch stabilization) 7- Young age (less than 17 years). Young Old Young age (less than 17 years) has a high pulp horn 7-Economic considerations, attitude and desire of the patient. Contraindications of RPD Tooth bounded short span The single standing abutment Contraindications of RPD When the few remaining teeth are poor abutments due to excessive mobility and poor morphology. Chronically poor oral hygiene and rampant caries. Advantages of removable over fixed partial dentures Constructed for any case They has a wide range of indications There is no loss of natural teeth substance. Cheaper than fixed restorations. They are able for addition and can be easily repaired. Oral hygiene measures can be easily performed. COMPONENTS OF RPD Denture bases and replacement teeth Rests Direct retainers (clasps) Indirect retainers Major connector Minor connector Stress breaker RPD components should provide 1- Support 2-Retention 3- Bracing 4- Reciprocation 5- Indirect Retention CONTENTS Terminology Purpose of RPDS Indications for RPDS Contraindications for RPDS Advantages of removable over fixed partial dentures Components of RPD
