REVIEWER INTRODUCTION TO COMPUTING: ⮛ INTRO TO COMPUTING MODULE: Computing is any activity that utilizes computers to manage, process, and communicate critical information that is an integral part of modern industrial technology. Gladys Mae West ⮚ an African-American mathematician known for her work contributing to the development of the Global Positioning System (GPS) developed in 1960’s. ⮚ Her skills and knowledge made her the second black woman hired at the Naval Providing Ground in Virginia, USA, in 1956. ⮚ West programmed the computer that calculated Earth’s geoid to adequate precisions to enable the existence of GPS. ⮛ MODERN COMPUTING MODULE: Internet of Thing (IoT) ⮚ A network of an extensive range of physical objectives that automatically share data over the Internet. ⮚ Allows faster information exchange and communication between “things” such as GPS and laser scanners. ⮚ It can be used to accept, locate, monitor, and manage “things” in IoT more reasonably. ❖ Radio Frequency identification (RFID) found in electronic tags and smart cards ❖ Sensor Technology detects and collects environmental signals; temperature, humidity, and speed. ❖ Embed Systems hardware and software are integrated to provide specific functions; automated teller machine (ATM), digital cameras, and calculators. AI (Artificial Intelligence) ⮚ Machines can learn from experience, adjust to new inputs, and do human-like activities because of this technology ⮚ In combination with cloud computing and big data, AI is driving digital transformation shift in the ICT industry for higher intelligence. EXAMPLES OF AI APPLICATIONS ❖ Facial recognition for unlocking smartphones ❖ Voice recognition ❖ Chatbots ❖ Robots ❖ Virtual assistants; Siri and Alexa ❖ E-payments ⮛ THE EVERCHANGING COMPUTERS MODULE Computer is a programmable computing device that can progress, store, and retrieve data. ⮚ The computer data is processed according to the software’s instruction or commands. ⮚ Computers play integral part in modern society by transforming the modern world into a global village. ⮚ The term “computer” originates as a word referring to someone who manually carried out calculations instead of an actual machine. Monitors “Primary” commonly used for computers but also in professional settings like video production and gaming and it can also refer to: ❖ Display Device A monitor is a screen that displays information from a computer, console or other devices. It can be an LCD, LED, or older CRT type. ❖ Software Monitor A program that tracks computer or network activity. ⮛ THE POWER OF THE WEB AND THE INTERNET WEB URL address of First-Ever Website The first web page went live on August 6, 1991, addressed as http://info.cern.ch/hypertext/WWW/TheProject.html. It contained links to the WWW project itself, including description of a hypertext, technical information on the web server creation, and links to other web servers once they become available.
