We call opposite numbers, the Additive Inverse. OPPOSITES We can write “opposite of (+5) is (-5)” like: -(+5) = -5 -(9) = -9 The subtraction symbol (-) can mean “opposite of” What is the opposite of (-18)? Opposite of (-18) is (+18). We could write this “-(-18) = (+18)” OPPOSITES The opposite of a positive number is negative and the opposite of a negative number is positive. What is the opposite of the following: (- = - (-10) = 10) 10 +10 (+2 =- - (28) = - IMPORTAN 8) 28 28 T (-4) =4 - (-4) = +4 SUBTRACTION OF INTEGERS LET’S APPLY WHAT WE HAVE LEARNED 7−5 (-2) − 5 (-2) − (-5) Note: When we subtract a negative number, we treat it like addition. RULE FOR SUBTRACTION There is only one rule for subtracting Integers: When subtracting a negative number, it is treated as addition.
