Finalize product or service design specification*** **FINALIZING PRODUCT OR SERVICE DESIGN SPECIFICATION** ***WORDS TO STUDY*** - - ***Product Specification***- also referred to as "[product specs](https://www.prodpad.com/blog/how-to-write-great-product-specs/)" is a document with a set of requirements that provides product teams the information they need to build out new features or functionality. A good product spec doesn't micro-manage product development. Rather, it gives them relevant context about users, business needs and other criteria to help them make informed decisions as they design and build a solution. - ***Prototype-*** is an early sample, model, or release of a product built to test a concept or process.  - - ***What is a product specification sheet?*** ============================================ A ***product specification sheet** is* a document that details what your product is. There should a broad overview as well as numerous sections that detail the individual components that you want to be delivered in a product. A good product sheet is concise yet thorough, having everything that the product needs, but without any fluff.  The product specification sheet will be received by your manufacturers and used as a reference for quotes and for the manufacturing of your product. Even before your product is made it is essential that a manufacturer has a product specification in order to give you an accurate quote. ***Why is Product Specification Important*?** ---------------------------------------------- The concept behind having product specifications is to provide the assigned team to create the product, a detailed overview of what all features should be embedded in the product to get the desired result. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Building a product specification can be started from the moment you have an initial idea and then can be proceeding until you push it over to development. A product specification consists of: - **Summary** -- the main idea that your product suggests. - **Relevant user stories**. - **User personas** -- the common portrait of your potential customers who is the solution for. - **Business cases** demonstrated the value that this may create for the business and potential clients. - **Design solution**. - **Functional specification** -- the technical details of the solution. ***Example of Product specification*** ***OPPO A5s*** **Dimensions** 155.9mmx 75.4mm x 8.2 mm ---------------------- --------------------------------------------- **Weight** 170g **Color** Red, Black, Gold, Green **Operating System** coloros 5.2, based on Android 8.1 **Processor** Mediatek Hello P35 **Battery Capacity** 4230mah **RAM** 2GB/ 3GB / 4GB **Display:** **6.2** "In- Cell, HD+ (1520 by 720 pixels) **Rear Cam** 13 MP & 2MP **Front Cam** 8 MP **Aperture-Rear:** f/2.2+ f/2.4 **SIM card Type** Dual Nano- Sim + MicroSD Card *When we are buying our phone mostly of us are looking for phone spec's. Include product specifications** Provide shoppers with technical product details such as material, weight, dimensions, and other unique factors. These details are especially important for electronics, equipment and tools. **2. Share the uses and benefits of the product** Explain your product's features and benefits, and show the different ways buyers can enjoy using your product. **3. Specify warranties, if applicable** Indicate any available warranties and their warranty periods.  +-----------------------------------+-----------------------------------+ | ***PRODUCT AND MANUFACTURING | ***MANUFACTURING SPEC*** | | SPEC*** | | | | ***Manufacturing Spec*** | | ***Product Spec*** | | | | Usually top secret, is part of | | - Is decided once the final | the quality assurance. That's true whether they're shopping in a physical store or online. Today's tech-savvy customers want detailed information about any new product or service they're considering buying. And remember, as mentioned above, 20% of purchases are abandoned because customers can't find the detailed information they need. So, clearly, product and service descriptions do matter. But the question is, why? - - - In the simplest terms, a great product or service description is vital because it will quickly answer the most pressing questions about what you sell. That makes it easier for customers to decide whether to buy.  The ***design spec*** is used during the design stage and produced by the manufacturer and designer. The product spec is used to show others what the product should be like. Food products are often designed in one part of the country and made in another. So the spec needs to have enough detail so that everyone understands what the final product must be like. The manufacturing spec is used to make sure that all products are identical and safe. ***Design spec-*** is a guideline for designers. So they know what kind of product to design. For example: - Healthy savoury children's product for packed lunch - Cost under 60p - Suitable for kids Suitable - for mass production - Has to be savoury - Can be sold as a healthy option - Should be high in protein ***PACKAGING DESIGN*** *Packaging design sets out to achieve two goals:* - safe arrival - effective promotion of the product. Package design consists of structural design, the technical construction of the package from a functional point of view, graphic (or visual) design, the appearance of the package and its promotional value. Packaging is required to keep a product and its components and accessories secure from the beginning of the production process to the time when it reaches the end user. ***Designing successful packaging*** In order to design successful packaging four sets of facts must be considered: - Product assessment. - The hazards of distribution. - Marketing requirements. - Packaging materials selection and machinery considerations. ***Product assessment*** - The nature of the product. - Its size and shape. - Its weight and density. - Its weaknesses. - Its strengths. - The effect of moisture and temperature changes on the product. Compatibility - whether the product is likely to be affected by any of the possible packaging materials. ***The hazards of Distribution*** Important points to establish are: - The type of transport-road, rail, sea or air. - The degree of control over the transport-is it private or public transport. - The mechanical conditions and duration of storage. - The nature and intensity of the mechanical and climatic hazards in transport, storage, retailing and use. ***Marketing Requirements*** - The package and the image. - Packaging and the self-service store. - The package and advertising. - The package and the price of the product. ***Packaging Graphics Design*** Packaging graphic design provides appeal (for presentation and display) and also information related to directions for use (warnings, shelf life, batch number, destination, storage conditions in the warehouse, transit and hand- ling). Printing is the principal means of fulfilling these functions; materials may be preprinted, or printed or over-printed during the product packaging operation. Packaging materials selection and machinery considerations Factors playing an important part in selecting a packaging system for a specific product are: - Production methods. - Display requirements. - Economic considerations. - Marketing needs. - Product characteristics. - Properties of the packaging materials. ***DIFFERENT TYPES OF PACKAGING MATERIALS*** ![](media/image6.jpeg) ![](media/image8.jpeg) -------------------------------------- ------------------------- ------------------------- ***Kraft paper*** ***Sulfite Paper*** ***Glass container*** ![](media/image10.jpeg) ***Tin plate containers*** ***tin- can*** ***flexible plastic*** ![](media/image12.jpeg) ![](media/image14.jpeg) ***foam sleeve packs*** ***shrink wrap*** ***sacks*** ![](media/image16.jpeg) ***Plastic bags*** ***tray*** ***plastic crates*** ![](media/image18.jpeg) ![](media/image20.jpeg) ***Wood (for transport packaging)*** ***aluminum*** ***Corrugated box*** ![](media/image22.jpeg) ***Plastic bottle*** ***Packaging mesh*** ***P.E bag*** ***PRODUCT LABELLING*** Whenever you manufacture a [product](https://www.marketing91.com/what-is-a-product/), you want to communicate the value of the product to the customers. One of the ways to do that is to use product labelling. Product labelling has become a means of communication between the [brand](https://www.marketing91.com/what-is-a-brand/) and the [consumer](https://www.marketing91.com/consumer/). Product labelling has very important information which is printed on the product packaging. ***Product labelling*** is a part of the packaging of a product. Labelling is the written information on the packages. These written labels on the package cover important information which [needs](https://www.marketing91.com/needs-wants-and-demands/) to be communicated to a customer. Product labelling is different from packaging. A product packaging might have the brand colors, the logo and the material as well as the shape of the package etc. The product is the informational / written part. Example -- A food product like [Maggi](https://www.marketing91.com/swot-analysis-of-maggi/) noodles might have the ingredients of the product as well as the instructions on how to make the product written and illustrated on the package. These instructions are nothing else but product labelling by the brand. Product labelling can be as less as simple one or two lines on the back of the product. Or it can be as much as the whole back end of the product being full of written information. If you pick up any shampoo, you will find the back to be full of information about the manufacturing location, [customer service](https://www.marketing91.com/5-steps-to-setup-better-customer-service-process/), ingredients, ways to apply, safety instructions and whatnot. ![](media/image24.png)***SAMPLE DESIGN FOR PRODUCT*** ![](media/image26.png) ***SAMPLE DESIGN FOR SERVICES*** ![](media/image28.jpeg)
