Jadallah, Fire Chief Review Date: 9/27/22 4.01 PURPOSE: To provide a method for locating fire hydrants. 4.02 POLICY: Fire Rescue personnel will install blue reflective hydrant markers on roadways to identify hydrant location. 4.03 AUTHORITY: The authority vested in the Fire Chief by Florida Statute 125.01; Miami-Dade County Charter Sections 5.01 and 5.02; and Code of Miami-Dade County Section 2-181. 4.04 RESPONSIBILITY: It is the responsibility of the appropriate Assistant Chief/Director or designee to review and update this policy. 4.05 DEFINITION(S): Hydrant Marker – Blue highway markers are approximately one (1) inch in height and three (3) inches square and are designed to reflect the lights of a passing vehicle. They are bonded to the pavement with epoxy glue and present no hazard to passing vehicles. Hydrant Steamer Fitting – The larger of three (3) openings on a hydrant to which fire apparatus connect to receive water. 4.06 PROCEDURE: I. LOCATION The location of hydrants should be verified through the Fire Hydrant Maintenance application. Volume: II ROUTINE DAILY ACTIVITIES Chapter: H SUPPRESSION INFORMATION Subject: 4 HYDRANT MARKERS II. INSTALLATION The hydrant should be used as a guide for the installation of all hydrant markers. A. The blue hydrant markers will be installed with the edge of the marker and the edge of the center line touching. B. The blue hydrant marker will be installed with the "beveled" edge in line with the direction of traffic flow. C. Two-Lane Highway: The blue hydrant marker should be placed directly in line with the hydrant steamer fitting, next to the center line of the road, edge to edge and on the side of the center line closest to the hydrant (Attachment I). D. Two-Lane Highway: (Corner) Blue hydrant markers should be placed directly in line with the hydrant steamer fitting and 2-½ inch hydrant cap, next to the center line of the cross street, edge to edge and on the side of the center line closest to the hydrant (Attachment II). E. Four-Lane Highway: The blue hydrant marker should be placed directly in line with the hydrant steamer fitting, next to the center line of the road, edge to edge and on the side of the center line closest to the hydrant (Attachment III). III. ATTACHMENT Hydrant markers will be attached to the surface of the road using the two- part epoxy paste and by following the procedures listed below. NOTE: USE CAUTION WHEN PLACING HYDRANT MARKERS. UNIT OFFICERS-IN-CHARGE (OICs) MUST ENSURE THAT TRAFFIC FLOW IS INTERRUPTED AND THERE IS NO RISK TO FIREFIGHTERS WHEN APPLYING THESE MARKERS! A. Locate the desired position of the hydrant marker per Attachments I, II and III. B. Apply equal amounts of Part "A" and Part "B" and mix until a gray paste is formed. 2 Rev. 9/27/22 Volume: II ROUTINE DAILY ACTIVITIES Chapter: H SUPPRESSION INFORMATION Subject: 4 HYDRANT MARKERS C. Cover approximately two (2) inches of the back of the hydrant marker with a 1/8-inch thick layer of epoxy. D. Install the marker by firmly pushing down with your hand, allowing approximately ¼ inch of epoxy to form around the sides of the hydrant marker. NOTE: Blue hydrant markers are made to reflect from the front and back.
