IAFC Information Bulletin - Energy Storage Systems (ESS) - Lithium Ion Batteries - Part 1 Compromised Litium Ion Batteries/ ESS Produce signi cant amounts of ammable gas with the potential risk of de agration and re Events occur due to damage, malfunction snd exterior re Structure Type: Commercial/ Utility - deny entry based on preplan May have remote FDC Large commercial 300’ isolation distance Residential - control power, ventilate and protect exposure All cases contact manufacture for technical support Pre-incident Establish defensive SOP’s of known locations Pre-incident/ Pre-plans cover location, type, disconnect and contact information 2021 re codes or NFPA 855 for information Incident Actions Evacuate area Contact manufacture (recommend cool down time/ instructions) Allow battery to burn itself out and protect exposure batteries by applying water rather than directly on burning battery Applying water will not stop Thermal Run Away Utilize disconnects or Estops (Battery must still Burn out) Stay out of Vapor Cloud Thermal imaging is ine ective due to layering inside battery for accurate temperature Use Water - lithium ion is not reactive with water Smoking battery prepare for defensive operation, do not open cabinet, battery ignites cool exposures allow to battery to burn out fl fi fi fi ff fl fi
