HS133 – Anatomy & Physiology for Speech & Language Therapy Introduction to Cell Structure and Basic Genetics Katie Chadd Learning outcomes By the end of this session, students will: 1. Be able to define basic components of a cell, including genetic structures, and their main functions 2. Be able to describe the processes of cell division, early embryonic and foetal development 3. Be familiar with the causes and consequences of common genetic syndromes that people who seek a speech and language therapist may have Slide Session structure Part one: Cell biology and basic genetics BREAK Part two: Cell division, embryonic and foetal development Part three: Genetic syndromes and clinical needs BREAK Activity: Group research on a clinical topic Slide 3 Tips and tricks This module, and this lecture, will introduce a lot of terminologies If you have not done so already, I recommend starting a glossary for your own personal use You will likely need to utilise this for the rest of your career – so good to start now! I will highlight in pink key terms that you need to ensure you can describe Slide 4 Part one: cell biology and basic genetics 5 Where do cells come in? Cells collectively form tissues Molecules collectively form cells Levels of structural organization (Marieb and Keller, 2018, p.29, fig 1.1) Slide What are cells? Basic unit of life All have common structures Vary in size, shape, functions in the body Plant vs. animal cells Organisms can be: Unicellular Multicellular organisms Some cells of the human body (Peate and Nair, 2017, p.3 ) Slide 7 Structure and components of a cell (Peate and Nair, 2017, p31, fig 2.1) Slide 8 Structure and components of a cell Further watching for those so inclined (
