Divine Inspiration: This refers to a divine influence upon humans. It resulted in the writing of the Scriptures. The Scriptures were written through the inspiration of the Holy Spirit. Scripture reveals truths. 2. Inerrancy: There are minor errors in Scripture (eg. dates and names) but there are NO errors in the messages. Scripture and Truth Everything in the Bible reveals the truth because it was inspired by God. However, it is crucial to read and interpret the Bible carefully and prayerfully in order to clearly understand the message it’s trying reveal. The Catholic Church reminds us that this can only be achieved by being attentive to what the authors truly wanted to affirm and to what God wanted to reveal to us by their words. Where did the Bible come fro How Did the Bible Develop? The Bible grew out of: 🞆 The religious experience of the people of Israel. It shows their developing understanding of their relationship with God. 🞆 The Bible has three types of history; Oral History: stories told, songs sung, history recounted and memorized. Written History: written stories, history recorded, instructions, guides. Edited History: selected the best of what was written and told. All three types of history happened at the same time. The Bible - Our Love Story The Spirit of God worked in, through and with the People to bring about the writings, to preserve them and to have them recognized by the People as sacred and inspired. The Bible, therefore, is the work of both the Holy Spirit and of the People of God. The Bible - Our Love Story 🞆 The Bible is our story, about our relationship with God, and God’s relationship with us, over time. 🞆 The Bible is our love story because it is the story of God’s deep love for each and everyne of us. 🞆 The creation stories in Genesis were written to help us understand God’s ability to create from nothing, the fundamental goodness of God’s creation and the way that God has called us to take part in creation. The Teaching of the Church on the Bible 🞆 It should not be surprising that the People of God today, that is, the Church, has a responsibility towards the Bible. The Church is responsible to God and to mankind for making the Word of God known and for giving guidance on how it should be properly interpreted. 🞆 Church guidance gives proper interpretation of Bible 🞆 At the same time the Church recognizes that the Bible is the Word of God - reverence & devotion 🞆 The Spirit of God speaks to our spirit through his Word. 🞆 Reason alone cannot grasp everything that is in the Word of God found in the Bible. 🞆 The Word of God is meant to reach to the core of our being; it is meant to touch our lives. Guidance of the Church Responsibility: We Must Study… The Church's 🞆To God and humans approach is this: 🞆 Bible is an old book reflecting for making ‘Word of interpreting & cultures God’ know. HELP US 🞆 Church is to interpret Bible 🞆Giving Guidance on understanding 🞆 Use our hearts in prayer and proper interpret the Bible. we contemplation (Liturgical Prayer) (reason/spiritual) are to use our 🞆 We must “do” the Word of God. 🞆Church holds that heads, our 🞆 By doing, we experience what God given hearts and our (love, forgiveness, faith, etc) intelligence feet. means. Take for example the reference; Genesis 1:31 🞆 The name of the book comes first. Here the name Genesis (Often Abbreviated Gen or Gn) 🞆 The Chapter number appears directly after the name of the book. The example gives the number 1, meaning Chapter 1. 🞆 The last number, separated from the chapter number by a colon, indicates the verse. The example refers to Verse 31. Scriptural references generally contain more detailed information. Here are some examples: Gen 1:1 – 8 Genesis, Chapter 1 Verses 1 through 8 Gen 1:3,6,9 Genesis, Chapter 1, Verses 3,6, and 9 Gen 2: 8-10, 18-25 Genesis, Chapter 2, Verses 8 through 10 and Verses 18 though 25 Gen 1-3 Genesis, Chapter 1 through 3 Independent Work time... Since all of the Bible is the word of God and it was written through the inspiration of the Holy Spirit, the Bible reveals the truth. Inerrancy – While there are minor errors in the scriptures (dates, names, etc.) there is NO ERROR in the message itself. You will delve into this further with today’s reading How Do We Interpret the Bible ? Literal Approach - Literal means “every word” Reading the Bible word for word Every sentence is taken to mean exactly what it says. Contextual Approach The words are put in context. We consider the culture, time, and place. This approach tries to determine what the authors were saying to the people of the ir own time. Sometimes we have to “interpret” the passage to understand what the author was saying. Interpret the following statements.
