HALAL STATUS: DEFINING IT & HOW TO COMMUNICATE IT CONSISTENTLY FOR INTERNAL USE ONLY BACKGROUND The communication of Halal Status on our products is not always consistent There is still some confusion as to the use of the terms Halal Certified and Halal Suitable With the re-design of all our product packaging coming up it is a good time to ensure consistent messaging across all product labels and all comms materials We have collated all this info and obtained agreement on how it is to be communicated across all products and materials consistently Competitors are actively communicating the Halal status of their products FOR INTERNAL USE ONLY 2 Halal CERTIFIED Halal SUITABILITY FOR INTERNAL USE ONLY 3 DEFINITIONS Halal certified A product is considered to be halal approved if it follows the Islamic dietary guidelines. Under the guidelines, there are two main conditions our products must fulfil, in order for them to be certified as halal. These are: 1). Only halal ingredients (raw materials) are used. 2). The factory is audited and approved by an Islamic Halal authorisation body. To ensure that our baby products are certified as halal correctly, the authorisation bodies used are selected based on their reputation within the Muslim community. Halal Suitable = No ingredients are haram but is not certified Halal – and no logo can be used Halal Other = Product contains PHP using porcine trypsin and tested for porcine DNA Use “For information on suitability for use in halal diets please call our Careline on 0800 0 81 81 80” Halal Not Suitable = ingredients are haram or there is cross contamination on the production line FOR INTERNAL USE ONLY 4 MBS Template for NN 2015 CURRENT UK SITUATION No use of Halal certified logo on our Halal certified products (except for CERELAC which uses “Suitable for Halal) FOR INTERNAL USE ONLY 5 MBS Template for NN 2015 FACTORY HALAL CERTIFICATES for UK products Sevares Biessenhofen Boue Nunspeet FOR INTERNAL USE ONLY 6 MBS Template for NN 2015 COMPETITOR INFO - websites FOR INTERNAL USE ONLY 7 MBS Template for NN 2015 COMPETITOR INFO - packaging Kendamil Cow & Gate Aptamil FOR INTERNAL USE ONLY 8 MBS Template for NN 2015 HOW WE WILL COMMUNICATE ON PACKAGING & MATERIALS TERM HOW TO COMMUNICATE On pack On MATERIALS Halal certified Halal Certified statement + logo Halal Certified statement + (logo provided by factory) logo (logo provided by factory) Halal Suitable Don’t say anything For information on suitability for use in halal diets please call our Careline on 0800 0 81 81 80 For information on suitability for For information on suitability Halal Other use in halal diets please call our for use in halal diets please (products have been tested for porcine DNA) Careline on call our Careline on 0800 0 81 81 80 0800 0 81 81 80 Halal Not Don’t say anything Don’t say anything Suitable 9 MBS Template for NN 2015 FOR INTERNAL USE ONLY LIST OF PRODUCTS AND THEIR HALAL STATUS Halal status PRODUCTS SMA Pro (ALL products) Halal certified Little Steps (ALL) Soya On Pack and on Materials - Halal Certified statement LF + logo (logo provided by factory) SMA BMF SMA Extra hungry CERELAC infant cereals HE – but will get this tested Halal Suitable On pack – Don’t say anything On Materials - For information on suitability for use in halal diets please call our Careline on 0800 0 81 81 80 SMA Advanced -6 HMOS FIM (DENWHP287 ) Halal Other (products have been SMA Advanced – 6 HMOS FOM (DELWHP114) SMA Advanced – 6 HMOs GUM (DEJWHP086) tested for porcine DNA) Comfort (DENWHSP291) On pack and on Materials - For information on AR (DENWHS292) suitability for use in halal diets please call our Careline on Gold Prem 1 (DEDWHL008) 0800 0 81 81 80 Gold Prem 2 liquid (DSHL001-3) Gold Prem 2 powder (DSH204-1) SNACKS ???? The products are not certified Halal, but we have had them analysed by the independent laboratory EUROFINS in order to establish whether there is any porcine (pork) DNA in the product. The results of the testing carried out by EUROFINS confirm there is NO Why is the protein in these products “porcine (pork) DNA” in these products. partially hydrolysed? Breast milk contains partially hydrolysed protein, We shared this information with the Halal Regulatory Commission here in the UK, which is easier to digest and absorb. Therefore, who have responded as below: where breast milk is not available, by providing “It is clear that porcine enzymes are not in the final products and are only involved partially hydrolysed protein in our products, we are in the reaction as a biological catalyst. As such, they take part in the reaction but trying to help provide an easier to digest baby do not form part of the final product” milk. FAQs How are the products hydrolysed and what enzyme is used? Is there any residual amount of the enzyme left in the Most baby milks contain long chains of milk product? proteins. In some SMA® Nutrition products The enzyme is destroyed through this hydrolysis process; (Comfort, AR, Gold Prem 1 and Gold Prem 2, however, in order to check if there is any residual amount of Advanced IF, FoF and GUM) these proteins have the enzyme left in the product, we have had the products been partially broken up (hydrolysed) into smaller analysed by EUROFINS, an independent laboratory. The pieces by using the enzyme trypsin (which is results of these tests have confirmed that there is no porcine derived from pork). (pork) DNA in these products. 11 MBS Template for NN 2015 FOR INTERNAL USE ONLY SMA High Energy ® (DSHL003-1) Contains PHP Technology is different, in that the enzymes are of microbial in origin and not from an animal source. The whey protein hydrolysate is heat treated after production to ensure that there is no carryover of the microbial material into the final product. The recipe itself is Halal however due to the production lines being different for the 90ml and the 200ml SKUs, the 90-ml is Halal certified but the 200ml is not Halal certified. We are going to get both products tested by EUROFINS for any residual porcine DNA and then we will be able to communicate its status in the same way we do for “Halal other” Will provide a letter for HCPs explaining this. The product is not suitable for vegetarians due to the DHA from a fish source. 12 MBS Template for NN 2015 FOR INTERNAL USE ONLY SUPPORTING MATERIALS/INFO FAQs (ZCO 1687) ALL products – updating with current recipes and new testing Letters for HCPs re the porcine DNA testing General (ZCO 1664) – updating HE (ZCO 1672) – to be tested and updated Preterm (ZCO 1678) – updating with new address Letter for Parents re the porcine DNA testing Preterm (ZCO 1682) - updating with new address 13 MBS Template for NN 2015 FOR INTERNAL USE ONLY 14 FOR INTERNAL USE ONLY
