Sketching the Terrain: Nature of the Problem of Evil Alkalde Jose St., Kapasigan, Pasig City The problem of evil is the philosophical question of how to reconcile the existence of evil and suffering with an omnipotent, omnibenevolent, and omniscient God. There are currently differing definitions of these concepts. The best known presentation of the problem is attributed to the NEW NORMAL Learning Greek philosopher Alkalde Jose St., Kapasigan, Pasig City e Believed that natural evil challenges the idea of God. “Is God willing to prevent evil, but not able? Then he is not omnipotent. Is he able, but not willing? Then he is malevolent. Is he both able and willing? Then whence cometh evil? Is he neither able nor willing? Then why call him God?” ― Epicurus- NEW NORMAL Learning Alkalde Jose St., Kapasigan, Pasig City NEW NORMAL Learning Alkalde Jose St., Kapasigan, Pasig City NEW NORMAL Learning Alkalde Jose St., Kapasigan, Pasig City "Evil" has a wider range of definitions than that for which human or supernatural agents are responsible. There are two main types of evil: 1.Moral evil - This covers the willful acts of human beings (such as murder, rape, etc.) 2.Natural evil - This refers to natural disasters (such as famines, floods, etc.) Of these two types, we may further divide both of them into the following two classes: 3.Physical evil - This means bodily pain or mental anguish (fear, illness, grief, war, etc.) 4.Metaphysical evil - This refers to such things as imperfection and chance (criminals going unpunished, deformities, etc.) NEW NORMAL Learning II. Theoretical Problems of Evil Alkalde Jose St., Kapasigan, Pasig City The theoretical problem of evil The problem of evil is generally formulated in two forms: the logical problem of evil and the evidential problem of evil. The logical form of the argument tries to show a logical impossibility in the coexistence of a god and evil, while the evidential form tries to show that given the evil in the world, it is improbable that there is an omnipotent, NEW NORMAL Learning omniscient, and a wholly good god. III. The Existential Problem w/ evil Alkalde Jose St., Kapasigan, Pasig City The problem of evil has different formulations, one of which is called the existential problem of evil; this means that when the evils and sufferings of the world actually affect man, man is psychologically unable to continue his former relationship with God and it seems that his emotions are not contended with God. NEW NORMAL Learning IV. The Three Theodicies Alkalde Jose St., Kapasigan, Pasig City WHAT IS THEODICY? 1.the vindication of divine goodness and providence in view of the existence of evil. NEW NORMAL Learning V. NECESSARY EVIL Alkalde Jose St., Kapasigan, Pasig City A necessary evil is an evil that someone believes must be done or accepted because it is necessary to achieve a better outcome—especially because possible alternative courses of action or inaction are expected to be worse. Examples of necessary evil The invisible part of politics - lobbying, majority maneuvers, and persuasion - is a necessary evil to manage problems effectively.... On a libertarian account, the state is ultimately seen as a necessary evil and should remain extremely limited in power and scope.
