DU AND ROLANDA PAYSU KHRISTINE M. SUCGANG INTRODUCTION The Tagalog term for haggling is tawad. Diksyunaryo Tesauro, defines it in two ways: tawad ay paghingi ng diskwento o paghiling ng bawas sa halaga (request for discount) and tawad ay diskwento o bawas (discount given or allowed). This involves a dialogue between the buyer and the seller, typically done in informal marketplaces. Haggling is a behavior, perhaps as universal as helping itself. It is a product of man's economic nature: the desire for efficiency at the least cost. Although it is universal, the specific circumstances surrounding it may vary from culture to culture. The study attempts to present an analysis of haggling in its local color among the Filipino consumers. It will look into the reasons for engaging in this behavior and explore some of the common haggling strategies employed by Filipino consumers. METHODS Interview (Q/A) Random Participants Public Markets such as Divisoria and Central (Talipapa and sidewalk vending places). Observations (Tiangge) , RESULTS AND DISCUSSION The results and conclusion for haggling based from the participants were viewed as an avenue of deception (seeking the advice of more experienced people to avoid making errors) and one has to be on the alert against this deception. Others take haggling as a venue for satisfying the need for achievement. Situational or environmental determinants also play an important role in the person's decision to haggle or not and his choice of haggling strategy. The determinants cited include the place of buying, the object/item to be bought and the person from whom it is to be bought. Additionally, pagtawad appeals to a broad spectrum of customers, encouraging pleasant persuasion and personal connections. It is a leisurely social pastime in high-context societies like the Philippines. People definitely have different reasons for haggling. Most are motivated by economic necessity but others by certain psychological satisfactions that they derive either from the act itself or from its result. SUMPONG Rita H. Mataragnon Department of Psychology University of the Philippiness INTRODUCTION In Filipino culture, the term "sumpong" describes a brief, impulsive, and frequently recurrent departure from a person's usual conduct that is usually regarded as insignificant and doesn't call for major action. This behavior is thought to be transient and inexplicable. Psychological analysis of the word reveals that it is a culturally accepted means for Filipinos to defuse stress, showing a propensity for indirect and delayed reactions to anger or displeasure. This behavior's cultural context is made clearer through the application of "pagtatanung- tanong," a nonreactive research approach that has been culturally adjusted. RELATED FILIPINO CONCEPTS: Baltik - Similar to sumpong but more hostile; characterized by erratic bursts of hotheadedness. Tampo - Shares some of the behavioral manifestations of sumpong, however, it has readily identifiable origin, usually an external, interpersonal event. Sama ng Loob - Ill feelings towards another; the reason is readily identifiable to the person himself but may not necessarily be evident to the object of the ill feeling. Init ng Ulo - More overt; 'hotheadedness'; little nuance is implied; describes behavior and behavioral dispositions. ASPECT CONNECTED TO SUMPONG 1. Food habits 2. Work habits 3. Folklore and superstitions CHARACTERISTICS OF SUMPONG 4. Sickness 1. Deviation from what is usual 5. Personality 2. Temporary duration 6. Artistic temperament 3. Cyclical and recurrent nature 4. Not directly explainable 5. Irrelevant behaviors 6. Non-deliberateness TYPES OF SUMPONG Aggressive Sumpong Withdrawing Sumpong High-spirited Sumpong High Specified Sumpong Antecedents Correlated with Increased Probability of Sumpong 1. Physiological changes (biorhythm, menstrual blues, even "bagong gising”) 2. Boredom 3. Neglect 4. Frustration 5. Personality traits (immaturity, insecurity, a lack of equilibrium) 6. Child-rearing patterns (spoiled child) - ading METHOD Literature Review RESULTS AND DISCUSSION Cultural Attitude Towards Sumpong There is acceptable for its triviality, lack of responsibility, transience, etc. It reinforces such behavior to some extent by giving special treatment or by humoring. Sumpong coping strategy against hostile environment. A THEORETICAL MODEL FOR THE DEVELOPMENT OF AGGRESSIVE SUMPONG RESULTS AND DISCUSSION All in all, the incidence of sumpong appears to depends heavily on both personality and situational variables.
