Discuss the definition, and role in the society of the civil engineering profession. Discuss the importance of ethical. conduct including its fundamental principles in the civil engineering profession. CIVIL ENGINEERING - a broad field that encompasses the planning, designing, construction, maintenance, and operation of an infrastructure. PROFESSION IN CIVIL ENGINEERING Construction and Management Engineering -upholding safety and environmental standards Geotechnical Engineering -examines how infrastructure interacts with the ground and other natural elements. PROFESSION IN CIVIL ENGINEERING Structural Engineering -creating a unique and aesthetically pleasing design for a bridge or building. Transport Engineering -to improve the ease of travel with new and improved design ideas. Water Engineering -examines how water interacts with infrastructure and how we can use it to our benefit. HISTORY OF CIVIL ENGINEERING The earliest Civil Engineering have commenced between 4000 and 2000 BC in Ancient Egypt and Mesopotamia (Ancient Iraq). When humans started to abandon a nomadic existence, thus causing a need for the construction of shelter. HISTORY OF CIVIL ENGINEERING The construction of Pyramids in Egypt (2700-2500 BC) considered the first instances of large structure constructions. Imhotep, the first documented engineer, built a famous stepped PYRAMID OF DJOSER pyramid for King Djoser located at Saqqara Necropolis. Tomas Cortes -First president of PICE HISTORY OF CIVIL ENGINEERING SOCIETIES IN THE PHILIPPINES PICE -Philippine Institute of Civil Engineers (PICE), created in February 1972. -Officially Recognized as the Official Organization Of Civil Engineers in the Philippines. With Engr. Cesar Caliwara as its first president. - played a significant role in advocating for civil engineers, with over 91,000 registered members and a focus on legal issues and knowledge sharing. HISTORY OF CIVIL ENGINEERING SOCIETIES IN THE U.S In the 18th century, the term "civil engineering" was coined to incorporate all things civilian as opposed to military engineering. HISTORY OF CIVIL ENGINEERING SOCIETIES IN THE U.S John Smeaton -Father of Civil Engineering -constructed the Eddystone Lighthouse. -founded the Society of Civil Engineers in 1771. Thomas Telford 1818 -first president of ICE. HISTORY OF CIVIL ENGINEERING SOCIETIES IN THE U.S ASCE -It is the oldest national Engineering Society in United States. -Its constitution was based on the older Boston Society of Civil 1852 Engineers from 1848. HISTORY OF CIVIL ENGINEERING SOCIETIES IN THE U.S Norchwich University -First private college to teach Civil Engineering in United States. -Founded in 1819 by Captain Alden Partridge. Development of Clean Water 1819 Sanitations -First degree college in Civil Engineering in U.S. HISTORY OF CIVIL ENGINEERING SOCIETIES IN THE U.S John Wesley Gunn -Received the first degree awareded by Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in 1835. Nora Stanton Blatch -First woman who received the first degree awareded by Cornell University in 1905. CODE OF ETHICS IN CIVIL ENGINEERING -The core of all Civil Engineering is ethics. It is the foundational principle and basis of practice. -Ethics in civil engineering involve following principles and values, ensuring structures are safe and adhering to honesty, transparency, and accountability. -Ethical conduct is crucial for project integrity, public safety, sustainability, professional integrity, and fostering diversity and inclusion. FUNDAMENTAL PRINCIPLES Civil engineers uphold and advance the integrity, honor and dignity of the civil engineering profession by: using their knowledge and skill for the enhancement of human welfare and the environment; being honest and impartial and serving with fidelity the public, their employers/employees and clients; striving to increase the competence and prestige of the civil engineering profession; and supporting the professional and technical societies of their disciplines. FUNDAMENTAL CANONS 1. Civil Engineers shall hold paramount the safety, health and welfare of the public and shall strive to comply with the principles of sustainable development in the performance of their duties. 2. Civil Engineers shall perform services only in areas of their competence. 3. Civil Engineers shall issue public statements only in an objective and truthful manner. 4. Civil Engineers shall act in professional matters for each employer or client as faithful agents or trustees, and shall avoid conflicts of interest. FUNDAMENTAL CANONS 5. Civil Engineers shall build their professional reputation on the merit of their services and shall not compete unfairly with others. 6. Civil Engineers shall act in such a manner as to uphold and enhance the honor, integrity, and dignity of the civil engineering profession. 7. Civil Engineers shall continue their professional development throughout their careers, and shall provide opportunities for the professional development of those civil engineers under their supervision. CONFLICT OF INTEREST - is a situation where a person has competing or incompatible goals, values, or obligations that may affect their professional performance. SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT -infrastructure design focuses on minimizing environmental impact, optimizing resource use, and promoting resilience. PRIME PROFESSIONAL - either a Licensed Professional Engineer or a Licensed Architect. -professional for which they are competent and qualified and should utilize the services of other qualified professionals. IMPORTANCE OF ETHICS IN CIVIL ENGINEERING It refers to a set of principles and values that regulate their behavior as professionals in this field. Ethical behavior is essential to upholding project integrity, promoting sustainability, maintaining professional integrity, and encouraging diversity and inclusion. Civil engineers have an ethical obligation to follow guidelines and principles established to protect public welfare while furthering the common good.
