American colonies had to fought for British Empire and the Native Americans had to fought for French Empire. The British won the war with many colony territories from France. French and Indian War Impacts on 13 Colonies Although the British had won the war, it had accumulated a lot of debts from the war. The British collected more taxes from the American colonists. It started with the Stamp Act which collected tax for any documents. After that, the British taxed everyday items such as tea and papers. “No Taxation without Representation” This slogan was from Boston politician James Otis meaning that American colonists would not pay taxes if they didn’t have the chance to represent America in British Parliament. American people refused to pay the taxes and the British forced people to pay taxes. Tensions had grown between the American people and British government. American people started to consider revolting against Britain. Boston Tea Party American people started the revolution in Boston and they were called Patriots. They became famous as “Boston Tea Party” after they boarded Britain cargo ships carrying tea and dumped tea into the sea at Boston Harbor. Crackdown on Boston Tea Party The British closed down the Boston Harbor, limited town meetings, and placed soldiers inside homes until the damage for tea was paid back. This had pushed American people to fight for independence by force. Continental Congress During the revolution, each American colony (state) sent representatives to Continental Congress. Continental Congress acted as the temporary government for America during the revolutionary war. Founding Fathers Several people from the Continental Congress were known as the Founding Fathers of the United States. Although they didn’t physically fought in the war except George Washington, their contributions to Constitution of the United States were so important. The Seven Most Well-known Founding Fathers 1. George Washington 2. John Adams 3. Thomas Jefferson 4. Benjamin Franklin 5. John Jay 6. Alexander Hamilton 7. James Madison Doubts on Revolution Some members of the Continental Congress had doubts about the armed revolution. Among them, John Dickinson was the most vocal. He was initially the supporter of the armed revolution. Later, he had doubts about US financial power to support the revolution and rooted for peace deal with the British King. However, the whole congress agreed to continue fighting for independence. Declaration of Independence During the war, on July 4 1776, Declaration of Independence was written by Thomas Jefferson with the support of John Adams and Benjamin Franklin. The main objective of the declaration is to reject tyranny and abusive power. Independent America After many battles and with the help of France, America finally defeated British in 1781.
