But before moving into a new lesson, let’s discuss on development of yourself as a first-year student. 1. Please continue building happy memories while studying. Hold on because we are about to discuss a new topic, but before that, let us identify the competencies you may acquire this week. ACSCU-ACI ACCREDITED Juan dela Cruz St., Toril, Davao City Key Concepts The physical self refers to the body which we interface with our environment and fellow being. It is a tangible aspect of the person that can be directly observed and examined. People nowadays are too conscious of how they look. How they see themselves in the mirror, how people will look at them and what will people say about them. The concept of ourselves and the perception of people around us will always have a big effect on how we deal with a situation, cultural or not. This discussion of the Physical Self has found its place in different Schools of Psychology, like psychoanalysis, behaviorism, humanism, etc. For example: William James considered the body as the initial source of sensation and necessary for the origin and maintenance of personality. It is an element of spiritual hygiene of supreme significance. For example, a boxer during a fight does not notice/feel his wounds until the intensity of the fight subsided. Sigmund Freud, in the Psychoanalytical school, the construction of self and personality makes the physical body the core of the human experience. Wilhelm Reich argued that mind and body are one; all psychological processes, he postulated, are a part of physical processes, and vice versa. 76 DAVAO CENTRAL COLLEGE, INC. ACSCU-ACI ACCREDITED Juan dela Cruz St., Toril, Davao City According to Erik Erikson, the role of bodily organs is especially important in the early developmental stages of a person’s life. Later in life, the development of physical as well as intellectual skills helps determine whether the individual will achieve a sense of competence and ability to choose demanding roles in a complex society. For example, a child gets their confidence when they are bigger, stronger, faster, and more capable of learning complex skills. Carl Jung argued that the physical body and the external world can be known only as psychological experiences. B.F. Skinner, says that the role of the body is of primary importance. This different orientation clearly shows us and explains how people deal with their physical selves. Regardless of what culture or traditions he or she may be, his or her interpretation of himself will be how people act in the community. Self – Esteem "We all know that self-esteem comes from what you think of yourself, not what other people think of you" - Gloria Graynor People from different cultures have opted to change their features in an attempt to meet the cultural standards of beauty, as well as their religious and/or social obligations. They modify and adorn their bodies as part of the complex process of creating and re-creating their personal and social identity to be accepted by society and to be able to accept themselves. This includes body painting, tattooing, pieces of jewelry, and adornments. Youth in the present time are too conscious of the physical attributes that they are not confident to face the day without make-up. As our physical self, dictates how we act in front of other people it also defines how we will manage our self-esteem. Yet, this self-esteem is vital to how we form positive and healthy relationships with people around us. We have different kinds of self-esteem; Inflated Self- Esteem (this person holds high regard for themselves. Better than others to the point of underestimating them), High Self-Esteem (this is positive self-esteem, which makes the person satisfied with themselves), and Low Self-Esteem (this person do not value themselves and do not trust their possibilities). Most of the time, this self-esteem is defined by what physical attributes they have. Beauty as defined by society, culture, or traditions, is what matters to the person. As a BSIT Student: People in the IT field are prone to physical insecurities because of the lifestyle brought by work. We may gain weight, develop acne, or experience hair loss due to stress and the time spent in the virtual world. Despite these hurdles, we must always consider having a healthy lifestyle and being acquainted with real people face-to-face. Having a mobile work environment allows us to do our job everywhere. So, we can go to our dream destination while setting a conducive work schedule. 77 DAVAO CENTRAL COLLEGE, INC. Go to Media in your Facebook account and check your first profile picture then compare it to your recent profile picture. Our physical insecurities come from different backgrounds that most of us carry on up until now. We may experience being bullied or left behind because of how we look and how different we are from the majority which affected our self-esteem.
