MIDBRAIN REACTIONS These reactions are also known as righting reactions (RR), as they interact with each other to establish normal head and body relationship in space and in relation to each other (alignment). https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MgXiNV03YfU&t=6s These reactions are responsible for development of postural control and the ability to change position in space. Labyrinthine Righting Reactions (LRR): Appear from 1 – 2 months of age and present throughout life (different positions: supine, prone, sitting, lateral tilting). For example: Enables the baby to clear the airways (prone). Neck Righting Reaction (NRR): This makes facilitation using the head as a key point of movement/control (KoC) possible i.e. the body follows the position of the neck [Birth to 6 months]. Body righting reaction (RR) acting on the body: These provide segmental rotation (for example in the trunk) and can be observed from 6 to 18 months. Body righting reaction (RR) acting on the head: Enables the child to hold/maintain the head in space. When the child is in prone, pressure on the abdomen and support on arms will aid with head control (extension/extensor tone). Optic Righting Reaction: This reaction is integrated at both mid-brain and cortical level. Starts appearing from 6 months (Present in adulthood as well). Test it for yourself 😊 Amphibian reaction: When the child is in prone lying, lifting his/her pelvis will cause flexion of the arm and leg on the same side. Appears from 6 months and is maintained throughout life.
