God created us in his image and likeness - Imago Dei Humans having the Imago Dei means: 1. We have a unique relationship with God - Only humans have the Imago Dei 2. We share a part of God’s divinity and authority - We share a part of God’s perfections and authority over his creations 3. We have a special role over all creation - Our role is called stewardship–managing and caring for God’s creations. 4. Everyone has natural (inherent) and inalienable (cannot take or give away) dignity - Everyone is important and has value (worth) 5. We have free will which gives us moral responsibility – the ability to choose between good and bad; moral responsibility is natural (inane) and learned. We have moral responsibility the moment we are born and the decisions we make are based on the moral responsibility that we learned. 6. We have ethical responsibility - doing things that are good Important Characteristics of Human Person 1. Intellect - ability to learn, apply that learning in real life, and be curious about the world around us (reflection) - Our main goal for having intellect is to know and share the truth - Dedication to do what is true 2. Free Will - Ability to make willing decisions based on our moral and ethical responsibility - Dedication to do what is good 3. Dignity of Man - Dignity is inane, inalienable, and immeasurable - Dignity is not connected to achievements, abilities, and status (external factors) 4. Ambivalent - Human feelings and thoughts sometimes don’t agree with each other - Every person has both good and bad in them - Concupiscence - temptation to do bad 5. Limited - We have limited abilities, capacities, and resources - Knowing our limits help us live a humble life 6. Unique but equal - Everyone is unique in their own way but all of us are equal with the same worth and dignity The Characteristics of Humans is universal (can be done by everyone) and immutable (never changes) just like the Foundation of Morality Social Sins - All social sins starts with personal sin–the sin of one person - It is an act that is bad in Christianity - A sin that is done in a daily to the point where we treat it normally (structured) - A sin that affects society negatively - An act that supports a present or future sin - An act where we don’t correct the sins of others - Introduced by Granfranco Girotti, assigned to the Apostolic Petitientery at the Vatican The Seven (7) Social Sins 1. Bioethical Violations - Sins that puts human life at risk - With out human life, all the important characteristics of human person is affected - Done in a medical environment - E.g.: Abortion, Invitro Fertilization (IVF), Euthanasia) 2. Morally Dubious Experiments - Sins where humans become experimental objects - Sins that copies God’s ability, the power of creation - E.g.: Cloning, Embryonic stem cell research, Anthrax (injection of death for death penalty people) - Done in an experimental environment 3. Drug/ Substance Abuse - Abusing substances to harm the body (temple of the holy spirit) 4. Polluting the environment - Harming nature which affects the mortality rate of humans because we get more affected to diseases and die because of natural disasters 5. Excessive Wealth - Intentionally not using money good by taking advantage of others 6. Creating Poverty - Intentionally using money to make the poor poorer - Not giving people what they deserve 7. Contributing to the Widening Divide Between Rich and Poor - The rich are not doing anything the lessen poverty which makes the rich richer and the poor poorer Social Teachings of the Church - Teachings that came from Jesus in the Gospel which tells how to solve moral and ethical problems - Promotes social justice and empathy 7 Themes off the social teachings of the Church 1. Life and Dignity of a Human Person - Every life is holy and must be respected and protected - From birth to death, everyone has equal chance to live 2. Call to Family, community, and participants - Human life is supposed to be special - We should always find the good in everything - We should participate in society - Socializing allows us to grow as a person 3. Rights and Responsibilities - Our rights and responsibilities must be respected and protected 4. Option for the poor and vulnerable - The needs of poor and vulnerable must be prioritized - Our actions affect the poor and vulnerable 5. Dignity and right of workers - Worker rights must be respected and protected - People > money - Work is good and holy 6. Solidarity - Work with others to have harmony (cooperation with others is a must) 7. Care for God’s creations - Care for everything we see (God’s creations)
