Summary

This document provides a historical overview of cell theory, including ideas like spontaneous generation and life force, as well as contributions from historical figures like Aristotle, Leeuwenhoek, and Hooke. It discusses the three main tenets of cell theory and explores the question of whether viruses and prions are considered living organisms.

Cell Theory Spontaneous Generation An idea that organisms could appear spontaneously (abiogenesis). This idea existed until about 1859 Ex: maggots appeared on raw meat (Redi’s) Life Force Needham suggested that there was a force that produces spontaneous generation. Proven false by Pasteur. Cell Theory Evidence The Dudes Who Dared to Explore the Miniature world of Cells 367-338 BC Aristotle observes and describes more than 500 animal species 1590 Jansen invents the microscope (2 lenses) 1665 Robert Hooke studies cork and names the structures cells 1650-1700 Anton van Leeuwenhoek discovers unicellular organisms (and nuclei). He also sees bacteria (animalcules) Goat Fibroblast Cell 1820’s Robert Brown called the opaque spot in cells “nucleus” Hoechst Stain (Nuclei) 1838 Matthias Schleiden concludes that all plants are made up of cells and that the nucleus is important in cell division 1839 Theodor Schwann suggests that all animals are also made up of cells Schleiden and Schwann propose the cell theory  all plants and animals are made up of cells 1855 Rudolf Virchow concludes through the study of pathogenic organisms that “ all cells come from other cells” by cell division. CELL THEORY 1) All living things are made of cells CELL THEORY 2) Cells are the basic unit of structure and function for all living things CELL THEORY 3) Cells come from pre- existing cells What about Viruses and Prions? Are they living? Virus Proteins that cause infection. Prions Proteins that cause infection.
