**FAMOUS PLACES AND LANDSCAPES** Module 2 Handouts The Eiffle Tower **It was built for the 1889 World Fair (Universal Expo) to celebrate the 100 anniversary of the French revolution.** **It was designed and built (1887-1889) by Gustave Eiffel** and named in his honor. The Great Wall of China **Around 220 BCE, Qin Shi Huang, also called the First Emperor**, **united China.** He masterminded the process of uniting the existing walls into one. **Zhu Yuanzhang, who became the Hongwu Emperor, took power in 1368 C.E. He founded the Ming Dynasty, famous for its achievements in the arts of ceramics and painting.** The Ming emperors improved the wall with watchtowers and platforms. Most of the familiar images of the wall show Ming-era construction in the stone. The Kremlin in Russia **The Kremlin is a fortress with enclosed walls and is built along the Moscow river.** The Kremlin name means **\"fortress within the city\"** The Leaning Tower of Pisa **The leaning tower of Pisa is one of the Italy\'s major tourist attraction. The freestanding tower of Pisa Cathedral was built over almost 200 years** and was finished in 1399. **In 2000 the tower was strengthened by putting stronger soil underneath the tower. You can walk up to 251 stairs to the viewing platform as a top of the tower, which is quite an amazing experience.** The Pyramid of Giza **The pyramids are made of stone and bricks and stand near Cairo** which is the capital of Egypt. **The Egyptian pyramids were built during a time when there was only manual labour and no machine** lifting equipment available. The Sphinx The famous monument of a **lion body with a pharaoh\'s head.** Sydney Opera House and Harbour Bridge The Sydney Opera House, **built in Australia\'s biggest city, is famous for its roof\'s architecture resembling shells or sails.** **The opera house was designed by Jorn Utzon** from Denmark and it was built between 1959 and 1973. **On 28 June 2007 the Sydney Opera House became a UNESCO World Heritage Site.** The Statue of Liberty The sculptor behind the Statue of Liberty, **Frédéric Auguste Bartholdi, was born in 1834 in Colmar, France in the Alsace region on the border of Germany.** The Statue of Liberty was a **gift of the people of France to the American people on the American Centennial in 1886.** The Taj Mahal in India The Taj Mahal, **which means \'crown of palaces\'** in the Persian language, stands on the riverbanks of the Yamuna River in Agra in northern India. **The Taj Mahal was built in 1631 by order of Mughal emperor Shah Jahan**, in memory of his favourite wife, Mumtaz Mahal, who died after giving birth to their 14th child. Moai in Easter Poland The Moai are **huge statues on the Polynesian island Rapa Nui**. The island is commonly called Easter Island and belongs to Chile. **Between roughly 1100 and 1650, Rapa Nui carvers created some 900 of these sculptures, nearly all of which are still in situ.** The Machu Picchu in Peru Machu Picchu which means **\'Old Peak\'** in the local Quechua language is a famous site in Peru. It is also referred to as **\'The Lost City of the Incas.** The ruins were never discovered by the European conquistadors but only became known in 1911 when an American archeologist was led to the site by locals.
