Popular Change Management Models Models: Kotter’s 8-Step Model and the ADKAR Model. Brief Overview: ADKAR is a more individual-centric approach whereas Kotter 8 step is a top-down approach. While Kotter's Model emphasizes the role of leadership in driving change from the top and embedding it into the corporate culture, ADKAR prioritizes individual awareness, desire, knowledge, ability, and reinforcement, underscoring the personal journey through change which collectively contributes to organizational success. Kotter’s 8-Step Model (video) Steps: 1. Create a sense of urgency. 2. Build a guiding coalition. 3. Develop a strategic vision. 4. Communicate the vision. 5. Empower others to act. 6. Generate short-term wins. 7. Sustain acceleration (Consolidate). 8. Anchor the Change. The ADKAR Model Components: – Awareness - Of the need for change. – Desire - To Participate and support the change. – Knowledge - On how to change. – Ability - To implement required skills and behaviors. – Reinforcement - To sustain the change. Application: How each component is crucial for successful change. The ADKAR Model (video) Components: – Awareness - Of the need for change. – Desire - To Participate and support the change. – Knowledge - On how to change. – Ability - To implement required skills and behaviors. – Reinforcement - To sustain the change. Application: How each component is crucial for successful change. Applying Change Management Models Key Points: – Choose the right model based on the change scenario. – Tailor the model to fit the organization's needs. – Monitor and adjust as needed. Example – Kotter’s 8-Step Model Scenario: A global consumer electronics company is preparing to launch a revolutionary new product, which combines AI with smart home technology. The company’s traditional product launch strategy has focused on gradual rollouts in select markets, but leadership believes a large, simultaneous global launch will generate excitement and capture market share. However, marketing and regional teams are concerned about the logistics and scalability of a global launch, while sales teams fear they won’t be able to handle the surge in demand. See Example Scenario (Escape Room Word Doc) Example – ADKAR Model Scenario: Implementing a Company-Wide Wellness Program A mid-sized technology company is introducing a comprehensive wellness program to address employee burnout and improve overall well-being. The program includes mental health resources, flexible work hours, fitness memberships, and wellness workshops. However, employees are skeptical about how it will be integrated into their workday without affecting productivity, and many are hesitant to participate. See Example Scenario (Escape Room Word Doc) IN CLASS ACTIVITY Change Process Mapping - Escape Room Mapping the Change Process Objective: Map out a change process using Kotter’s 8- Step Model OR the ADKAR Model.
