An organizational structure has many levels, a rigid reporting structure, and substantial bureaucracy frequently uses a predictive approach. How project teams are built and the leadership skills project managers need to help teams succeed. Discussions of human motivation and empowerment are presented as well as conflict resolution. What is the definition of business? What is modern business ? What is traditional business? What is capitalism? 8 What is business? The term business refers to an organization or enterprising entity engaged in commercial, industrial, or professional activities. The purpose of a business is to organize some sort of economic production of goods or services. 9 Modern Business or Traditional? What’s the difference? Is there a difference? Without this, international trade would slow/stop. 14 Business History History is important in business, as it has a way of predicting/repeating itself. eg business cycles, weather cycles, lessons learned Organizations have a great deal of inertia and there are difficulties in making change. Knowing the history and reasons why for what the organization is focusing on is useful. Most recently we saw a great deal of change coming quickly because of the covid pandemic. Everyone had to adapt and absorb a great deal of information in a short time. 15 Business Progress Early ‘business’ consisted of the trades/piecemeal production that happened in people’s homes. Subsistence production → people produced enough to feed themselves. Specialization and industrialization led to massive increases in production in the 1830’s-1850’s. A period in Europe known as the industrial revolution. 16 Why is this important ? The companies that you work for will be operating under a set of assumptions that it is important to know. You will work within the hierarchy of a company and within the constraints that exist. The resources you need to manage as a project manager – are living certain under constraints. You as a PM have to work with the many different areas and organizational layers of a company. 17 Summary Understanding the organizational structure helps the PM know who they are ‘working’ for. Why the project is important to the organization? Who is going to help lead the project with the PM? How does the project team come together? After class activity: Create a working agreement to review next week in class. You will likely need to look up what a working agreement is and then outline some things you want included on that. We will agree as group on what is in that agreement. 19 Assignment #1 - due Wed Sept 11th, 2024 Provide a summary of yourself, who you are, why did you sign up for this program? What is your goal? Be specific. Summarize your PM experience, in terms of having led projects or not? Been on project teams as a team member, etc. Or no experience in project, its all new to you.
