VALUES VS NEEDS 3 VALUES • Operational belief that one accepts as one’s own, which assists in determining behavior • Consciously chosen desirable goals, varying in importance, that serve as guiding principles in people’s lives when a choice between conflicting options has to be made VALUES NEEDS o Influence behavior o Influence behavior o Behaviors that are values-based are driven by reflection o Behaviors that are needsbased are more automatic and predictable o Important to adopt new professional values in addition to personal values APTA CORE VALUES Accountability Active acceptance of the responsibility for the diverse roles, obligations, and actions of the physical therapist including self-regulation and other behaviors that positively influence patient and client outcomes, the profession, and the health needs of society. Altruism The primary regard for or devotion to the interest of patients and clients, thus assuming the responsibility of placing the needs of patients and clients ahead of the PT’s self-interest. Collaboration Working together with patients and clients, families, communities, and professionals in health and other fields to achieve shared goals. Collaboration within the PT/PTA team is working together, with each partner’s respective role, to achieve optimal PT service and outcomes for patients and clients. Compassion/Care Compassion is the desire to identify with or sense something of another’s experience; a precursor of caring. Caring is the concern, empathy, and consideration for the needs and values of others. Duty The commitment to meeting one’s obligations to provide effective PT services to patients and clients, to serve the profession, and to positively influence the health of society. Excellence In the provision of PT services, occurs when the PT consistently uses current knowledge and skills while understanding personal limits, integrate the patient or client perspective, embrace advancement, and challenge mediocrity. Inclusion When the PT/PTA create a welcoming and equitable environment for all, and they commit to providing a safe space, elevating diverse and minority voices, acknowledging personal biases that may impact patient care, and taking a position of anti-discrimination Integrity Steadfast adherence to high ethical principles or standards, being truthful, ensuring fairness, following through on commitments, and verbalizing to others the rationale for actions. Social Responsibility The promotion of a mutual trust between the profession and the larger public that necessitates responding to societal needs for health and wellness. MORALS o Individual guidelines ETHICS o A set of guiding moral influenced by society, principles, a consciousness culture and/or religion of moral importance (can then vary) o Principles on which one’s judgments of “right” and “wrong” are based o Help determine what behaviors are “right” or “wrong” o Regulate what behaviors are allowed o Influenced by profession, organization, etc. CODE OF ETHICS ▪ The set of moral norms adopted by a professional group to direct value-laden choices in a way that is consistent with professional responsibility ▪ Guides human behavior ▪ In physical therapy, it describes and guides the desired behavior of a PT in multiple roles APTA CODE OF ETHICS ● Principle #1: PT’s shall respect inherent dignity and rights of all individuals ● Principle #2: PT’s shall be trustworthy and compassionate in addressing rights and needs of pts ● Principle #3: PT’s shall be accountable for making sound professional judgements ● Principle #4: PT’s shall demonstrate integrity in their relationships with pts, clients, families, colleagues, students, research participants, other health care providers, employers, payers, and the public ● Principle #5: PT’s shall fulfill their legal and professional obligations ● Principle #6: PT’s shall enhance their expertise through the lifelong acquisition and refinement of knowledge, skills, abilities, and professional behaviors ● Principle #7: PT’s shall promote organizational behaviors and business practices that benefit pts, clients, and society ● Principle #8: PT’s shall participate in efforts to meet the health needs of people locally, nationally, or globally 11
