Name:\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_ **How to Write a Strong Essay** Every strong piece of analytical writing, that is a piece of writing that explains something in detail, needs a strong **thesis statement**. So, what is a thesis statement? A thesis statement is usually one sentence towards the end of your first paragraph that lays out your argument for the rest of the paper. It is used as a guide for your essay. The remaining paragraphs should be used to provide evidence in order to prove your point. **Examples of thesis statements**: **Weak:** George Washington set many important precedents as president. - This is a fact, not a position. **Strong:** The precedents that Washington set as America's first president greatly benefited the American political system. - This is a clear position that can be supported or opposed **Weak:** The Revolutionary War brought about change in American society. - This is, technically, a position. But, it is vague and not really debatable. **Strong:** The Revolutionary War ushered in a slew of wide-ranging and permanent social changes in American society. - This is a clear, strong, and debatable thesis. Based on the essay prompt I have assigned you, what would be some examples of a strong thesis statement you could use in your paper?
