There were no loud alarms when I gently moved aside the loose fence slats. No guards yelled or shot their guns. I sprinted over the grassy hill, trying to be as quiet as a mouse. I didn't stop until I reached the edge of the woods. I felt like a bird soaring high in the sky, finally liberated from its cage. "Freedom" was a warm embrace enveloping me, filling me with joy and relief. For months, I had planned and waited, afraid I would be caught and punished for trying to leave. Now, I left behind the troubling memories of my homeland, except for the ones that still haunted my dreams. Looking back at Necras one last time, it seemed so diminutive, like a tiny toy village. The lies our leaders told us stung like a bee. I spat on the ground in anger and walked away without a glance back. I walked a long way until darkness fell. I found shelter in a barn and ate hungrily, my stomach growling after hours without food. Exhausted but relieved, I slept deeply for the first time in years. When I woke to voices outside, my heart raced. Peeking through a window, I saw two men, a woman, and their curious dog. The dog barked at me, but the men spoke gently, like friends. They invited me to their nearby house, which looked cozy with its white walls and green edges. Later, a kind doctor came to check on me. He asked questions and examined me carefully. He said I was physically fine but wondered if I believed in strange things. They showed me a map where my country, Necras, wasn't marked. I couldn't believe it. How could my home not exist on their map? Confusion turned into fear as they started to doubt me. They thought I might be confused or unwell. I tried to explain, but they couldn't believe that Necras was real. It was all too much, and I found myself in a scary situation.
