ORE MINERALS Ore is natural rock or sediment that contains one or more valuable minerals, typically containing metals, that can be mined, treated, and sold at a profit. Ore is extracted from the earth through mining and treated or refined, often via smelting, to extract the valuable metals or minerals. MINING Is the process of mineral extraction from rock seam or ore - a natural rock or sediment containing one or more valuable minerals. TWO METHODS OF MINING Surface Mining 1. Open Pit Mining 2. Strip Mining 3. Dredging Underground Mining SURFACE MINING Is used to extract ore minerals near the surface of the Earth. The soil and rocks that cover the ores are removed through blasting. Blasting is a controlled use of explosives and gas exposures to break rocks. 1. OPEN PIT MINING Is used to extract ore minerals near the surface of the Earth. STRIP MINING This mining method involves removing overburden, dumping it behind a desired deposit, extracting it, creating a parallel strip, and depositing waste materials onto the first strip. 2. STRIP MINING 3. DREDGING This is the process of mining materials from the bottom of a body of water, including rivers, lakes, and oceans. 3. DREDGING UNDERGROUND MINING Is used to extract the rocks, minerals, and other precious stories that can be found beneath the earth’s surface. In underground mining, miners need to create a tunnel to reach the ore minerals. MINERAL PROCESSING Sampling Analysis Comminution Concentration Dewatering SAMPLING Is the removal of a portion which represents a whole needed for the analysis of this material. ANALYSIS Is important to evaluate the valuable component in an ore. This includes chemical, mineral and particle size analysis. COMMINUTION Is the process where the valuable components of the ore are separated through crushing and grinding. This process begins by crushing the ores to a particular size and finishes by grinding the ores into a powder form. CONCENTRATION Involves the separation of the valuable minerals from the raw materials. DEWATERING Uses the concentration to convert it to usable minerals. This involves filtration and sedimentation of the suspension and drying of the solid materials harvested from the suspension.
