Rating Your Point of View 1. You arrive on an island where the women go topless. You a. are shocked at their bad morals b. stare at the pretty girls c. try to act in a comfortable manner 2. You a. smile at them and walk on b. get annoyed at their rudeness and tell them so c. are convinced they are talking about you, but say nothing 3. At a special dinner in your honor, they serve raw sea snails, boiled bananas, and other things you’ve never seen nor eaten before. You a. find their food revolting and refuse to eat b. gingerly taste everything c. try everything so not to offend 4. While you are walking in town, an islander friend of the same sex runs up and holds your hand. You a. continue holding hands so as not to offend b. continue holding hands, but feel very uncomfortable c. refuse to hold hands because it’s “just not done” 5. While you are visiting a village, your host covers your head with a cloth because the people believe the ghosts of that village harm people who expose their hair. You a. laugh and say that there’s no such thing as ghosts so you won’t cover your head b. wear the cloth because you recognize their fear is real c. make the point that you don’t believe in ghosts, but wear it anyway 6. Your hostess tells you it’s time for a bath. She points towards a big barrel of rainwater. You a. ask her how they bathe b. demand a hot shower c. take off your clothes and jump right in 7. As an important guest, you are assigned a bodyguard who follows you everywhere. You a. tell that person to get lost b. feel overprotected and disgusted, but accept it anyway c. make the best of it and enjoy that person’s company 8. Because you are a Westerner, the family you are staying with brings out their chinaware. However, because there is no hot water, the plates are always greasy. You a. prefer using plates, greasy or not b. wash your plate several times before you are served c. tell them you prefer using what they usually use – woven coconut leaf plates 9. Your clothes are dirty and you’d like to wash them. However, there are no washing machines on the island. You a. keep wearing them and complain about the primitive conditions b. take your clothes to the stream and wash them c. leave them in a pile in hopes that your host will wash them 10. The people here sleep on the floor. However, since you are a guest, they fix up a table, putting several layers of blankets on it. You a. thank them, but tell them you prefer sleeping as they do b. explain that the “bed” will be hard on your back c. decide to scout the village for a bed right away 11. The children in the village are fascinated by you since they don’t get many visitors. They keep stroking your hair and touching you.
