ABOUT THE POET Rabindranath Tagore (1861 - 1941) was the youngest son of Dcbcndranath Tagore, a leader of the Brahmo Samaj. He was educated at home and went to England at the age of seventeen for formal education but he did not complete his education there. Apan from his involvement in a· variety of lice,ary activities Tagore had to manage his family estates which brought him in close contact to common humanity and accounted for his involvement in many social reforms.of pre - independent India. · _. Tagore immensely contributed to literature as a. poet, dramatist, novelist and short story writer. He also composed nonfictional prose like essays, criticism, philosophical treatises, journals, memoirs, and letters. Besides, he was a noted musician, painter, actor-produccr- Comp. Eng. (C.U.)-3 34. Tagore spent the four years of his life in constant pain and had two long bouts illness. In 1937, he went into a comatose condition, which rela after a period of three years. Tagore died on August 7, 194 Joras~nko mansion in which he was brought up. ~ ABOUT THE POEM The poem was originally tided 'Prarthona' when Tagore pu it in his collection of poetry titled 'Naibedya' ('Offerings') jn However, 'Where the Mind is With.out Fear' was indud the title 'Chino Jetha Bhaiyashunyo' ii) Tagore's selection poems 'Gitanjali' ('Song Offerings'), published in 1910. Tagore published the English translation of 'Gi~ ' original Bengali tide.
