Exploring Energy RENEWABLE Sources AND NON- RENEWABLE What is energy? 1 2 3 It can be found We use in many Energy is the energy to different ability to do power our forms, such as work. homes, heat, light, sound, businesses, and electricity, and transportation motion.. Energy is a fundamental part of our lives. We use it to do everything from cooking food to driving our cars to watching television. Without energy, our world would be a very different place. Renewable Energy What is renewable Renewable energy comes from energy? natural resources that are naturally replenished, such as sunlight, wind, and waves. Solar Solar energy comes from the sun. The sun can be used to give us heat Energy energy. Solar panels are used to convert sunlight into electricity. Solar energy is one of the most abundant renewable energy sources on Earth. It is a clean and sustainable source of energy that can be used to power our homes, businesses, and transportation. Wind Wind energy is energy from the Energy wind. Wind turbines use blades to catch wind and turn a generator, which creates power. Wind energy is another abundant renewable energy source. It is a clean and sustainable source of energy that can be used to power our homes, businesses, and transportation. Hydropower Hydropower is energy that comes from moving water. Water that flows down fast-flowing Energy rivers is used to spin turbines in dams that generate electricity. The movement of big waves at sea can also be used to generate energy. Hydropower is one of the oldest renewable energy sources. It is a reliable and sustainable source of energy that can be used to power our homes, businesses, and transportation. Geothermal Geothermal energy is heat from under the Earth’s surface. Geothermal energy can be collected Energy from hot water just below the Earth’s surface or from hot magma deep below the surface. A geothermal power plant is used to convert the heat from the earth’s surface into usable energy. Geothermal energy is a reliable and sustainable source of energy that can be used to power our homes, businesses, and transportation. It is also a clean source of energy that does not produce pollution. Biomass Biomass means “natural material.” Energy can be obtained by burning Energy natural waste materials such as scrap pieces of wood, dead trees, and unused parts of crops. Biomass is used to create biofuels. Biomass energy is a renewable source of energy that can be used to power our homes, businesses, and transportation. It is also a clean source of energy that can help reduce our reliance on fossil fuels. Non-Renewable Energy What is non- renewable energy? Non-renewable energy comes from natural resources that are not naturally replenished, such as coal, oil, and natural gas. Nuclear Energy Nuclear power stations use uranium as fuel to make electricity. Uranium is a natural resource taken from the ground, so it is not renewable. Nuclear power doesn’t produce much waste, so it is a very clean way of generating energy. COAL, PETROLEUM, AND GAS Coal, petroleum, and natural gas are considered nonrenewable because they can not be replenished in a short period of time. These are called fossil fuels. Fossil Fuels are the most common energy source, but what IS a fossil fuel? A hydrocarbon deposit, such as petroleum, coal, or natural gas, derived from living matter of a previous geologic time and used for fuel. Coal Energy Coal is mined from under the ground and burned in large power stations to produce electricity. The coal that we use cannot be replaced, so one day there will be no coal left. HOW IS COAL MADE ??? Burning COAL = Pollution Nearly 50% of the nitrogen oxide (Nox) in the atmosphere and 70% of sulfur dioxide are direct result of emissions released when coal is burned. These are directly responsible for crop failures from “acid rain” formation (later explained in this presentation). Human Health Issues Surround Coal Mining and its Use Workers can contract lung diseases, skin diseases and ulcers from coal dust and other impurities mined. Burning coal produces huge amounts of smog, also related to illness. HOW ARE OIL AND GAS MADE ??? Oil Energy Oil is found deep underground and pumped up to the surface for us to use. Oil is burned at some power stations to make electricity and is also used to make fuel, which we use in our cars. Oil Energy Oil is derived from Petroleum, the definition of which is : a thick, flammable, yellow-to-black mixture of gaseous, liquid, and solid hydrocarbons that occurs naturally beneath the earth's surface, can be separated into fractions including natural gas, gasoline, naphtha, kerosene, fuel and lubricating oils, paraffin wax, and asphalt and is used as raw material for a wide Oil Energy Crude oil is a smelly, yellow-to-black liquid and is usually found in underground areas called reservoirs (crude oil = petroleum). The top 5 OIL-producing nations are Saudi Arabia, USSR, USA, Iran, China. 58% of the crude oil used for fuel and products in the US is imported from other nations. The top 5 oil-producing states are Texas, Alaska, California, Louisiana, Natural Gas Energy Natural gas is found deep underground and is pumped into our homes. We use it to cook and burn it in a boiler to heat our water. The gas that we pump from underground will one day run out, and there won’t be any left to use. Quiz time It's time to see what you've learned. Let's take a fun quiz to test our knowledge. Questions 1 What is the energy source that comes from the sun?
