You and your family are in my prayers. As far as Bahati being dismissed to the nurse, she did not ask before the test. She requested to leave at 12:50 pm and I immediately told her to gather her things and go to see Nurse Young. I emailed Mrs. Young at 12:52 pm to let her know Bahati would be coming to see her. I’m not sure how there could be miscommunication with these events. Thank you for ensuring Bahati will communicate. I do not need for you to email if she will be absent, Bahati can advocate for herself in the case of absences or make up work, etc. Again, I appreciate you helping Bahati and I look forward to a successful year for her in Honors Geometry. It seems that she may have requested to see the nurse before her math test but was not given permission until later. Moving forward, I will make sure to inform you in advance if Bahati will be absent or late for math class due to medical reasons. This is my usual practice with all of Bahati's teachers, and I will continue to do so for the rest of the academic year. I want to mention that the start of this school year has been particularly difficult for me as I am still grieving the loss of my mother. Dealing with this emotional pain has made it challenging for me to focus on daily tasks. Thank you for addressing this matter. I am grateful for your continued collaboration in ensuring Bahati's academic success. Sincerely, Ms. Okojie On Aug 23, 2024, at 2:00 PM, Gregg Nunley wrote: Good afternoon, Thank you for reaching out about Bahati’s test. As Bahati did not notify me prior to the start of class that she was not prepared for today’s test over Algebra 1 concepts, she was informed that she would need to complete the test this afternoon. When students do not contact me prior to a test, the implication is that they do not need extra time to prepare. Additionally, none of the concepts included on today’s test contained any material outside the scope of a middle school Algebra 1 class and the expectation is material outside the scope of a middle school Algebra 1 class and the expectation is that all Honors Geometry students have mastered all concepts in Algebra 1 that were assessed on today’s exam. With that being said, I understand that some students need more time than others to adjust to the rigors of honors math courses at Bishop Gorman High School. While the policy of Bishop Gorman High School is to not allow any retakes for quizzes and tests, I will allow Bahati to take a different version of this exam with the condition that she and you understand this is an extreme circumstance and will not be afforded again. Please help Bahati to communicate with me when she needs more time in the case of an absence. I cannot guarantee that more time will be available based on circumstances, but she at least needs to communicate with me. I will be available at 7:00 am on Monday, August 26 in room 401 for her to take this Algebra 1 exam. Please have her fill out the google form on our class stream of our google classroom to confirm she will be present at that time. Also, you mention that Bahati was not allowed to excuse herself to see the nurse. Are you under the assumption that I did not allow her to see the nurse? When she asked me to see the nurse, I immediately said yes and she should take all of her belongings and sent her at 12:50 pm. So, I’m confused when you mention that she was not allowed to go see the school nurse. Please clarify for me. Thank you for your help, Mr. Nunley Mathematics Department Chair Bishop Gorman High School From: joan okojie Date: Friday, August 23, 2024 at 1:45 PM To: Gregg Nunley Cc: Sandy Young , Tracy Goode , Bahati Nyaruba Subject: Request for Bahati Nyaruba to retake Math Test Greetings Mr. Nunley I am writing to you on behalf of my daughter Bahati Nyaruba, who is a student in your math class at Bishop Gorman High School. She called me earlier today from Health Services informing me that she was made to take a math test upon her return from the hospital. Bahati had been absent from school for two days due to medical reasons and was not prepared to take a test today. She had tried to excuse herself to see the nurse as she was feeling lightheaded, but unfortunately, she was not allowed to. Bahati was absent from school to take care of her health and was using the time upon her return to Campus today, to catch up on missed assignments and classwork. I kindly request that you allow Bahati to retake the math test at a more suitable time. She was not in the right condition to take the test today and would appreciate another opportunity to demonstrate her understanding of the subject. I understand the importance of maintaining academic progress, and I assure you that I understand the importance of maintaining academic progress, and I assure you that Bahati is a dedicated student who takes her studies seriously. I believe that with a little more time to prepare, she will be able to perform well on the test. I appreciate your understanding and consideration in this matter. Please let us know when Bahati can retake the test, and we will make sure she is well-prepared for it. Thank you for your time and attention. Sincerely, Ms. Okojie From: joan okojie [email protected] Subject:Absence of Bahati Nyaruba and Request for Accommodation Date:August 23, 2024 at 2:52 PM To:[email protected], [email protected], [email protected], [email protected], [email protected], [email protected], [email protected], [email protected] Cc: Sandy Young [email protected], Tracy Goode [email protected] Dear Teachers, I am writing to inform you about my daughter, Bahati Nyaruba, who was absent from school for two days due to medical reasons. As a result, she missed all eight of her classes and has been unable to complete any of the class and homework assignments that were due on those days. This has caused her to fall behind on her coursework and she now has missed assignments and deadlines for class work submission, and recent assignments that still need to be completed. I understand that Bahati will require some time to catch up on all the missed work and make up any tests that she may have missed. However, I am concerned that trying to complete all this work at once may overwhelm or stress her out. To avoid this, I kindly request that she be given some accommodation in terms of deadlines and expectations for her make-up work. Bahati will be meeting with each of her teachers individually to discuss the missed assignments and clarify what is expected of her to submit her work accordingly. I would appreciate it if you could provide her with the necessary guidance and support during this time. Thank you for your understanding and support. Sincerely, Ms. Okojie. Immediately after dismissal, I headed to the gym as fast as I could, which was not very fast (2:43 p.m.) due to medical reasons. When, I arrived to the gym I headed to your classroom, which is within the gym. When, I stepped into the classroom no one was there. My exam was there sitting on a desk, unsupervised. So I wandered looking into the gym. However, I only saw volleyball players playing. I could not walk through and risk getting hit in the mist of the games, and did not travel further into the gym expecting you to come into the classroom at some point. I had waited for around 10 minutes when I received your email, (2:55 p.m.)asking where I was. I let you know, and followed up a couple minutes later after calling my mom and not seeing you but seeing my test. (2:58-3:02 p.m.) She recommended that I email, and return the test to the office. As in her words “I should not take a test without a present proctor, in order to preserve my academic integrity.” Which I am not willing to risk damaging ; as not to do anything that may compromise my spot in school as I did sign the honor code, and acknowledge the handbook. I notified you and left. I did not receive the rest of your emails until 3:45 when everything was set and done. I understand you are only available next week on Tuesday, September 3rd at 7 a.m. However, early in the morning is not feasible for me due to medical reasons. I am registered in the learning center and can take my test there after school, when is optimal. Please let me know when that will be. I will return on Tuesday morning. I will see you at 7:00 am in room 401 on Tuesday, September 3. You will have 10 minutes to review the one sheet you did not go over with the rest of the class. This appointment is crucial for her ongoing treatment and her well-being. Unfortunately, this appointment overlaps with Period 8 and her scheduled makeup Quiz for Geometry at dismissal. I kindly request that we reschedule this makeup Quiz for a later date. Thank you. Sincerely, Ms. Okojie From: joan okojie [email protected] Subject: Clarification on Bahati Nyaruba's Academic Accommodations Date: October 11, 2024 at 2:18 PM To: Mary DeJoria [email protected] Cc: Tracy Goode [email protected], Rick Spiritosanto [email protected], Sandy Young [email protected] Dear Ms. Dejora, Thank you for your email. I would like to clarify certain aspects concerning my daughter, Bahati Nyaruba’s ability to take tests or quizzes while she is present in class. As you are aware, Bahati is managing a medical condition that can lead to severe pain crisis which may occur unexpectedly. Additionally, as a recent liver transplant recipient, she faces complications that further affect her health. These episodes can arise at any time, including the night before a scheduled assessment. During pain crisis, Bahati is often administered narcotics to manage her pain, and we ensure that her doctor is informed, especially if her condition worsens. In some instances, this may necessitate emergency care, including intravenous pain management or hospitalization. When Bahati is hospitalized for one or two nights, she may return to campus on the day of a scheduled assessment. Unfortunately, the treatments she receives often leave her sedated, which can impact her ability to participate effectively. Furthermore, fatigue may prevent her from adequately preparing for assessments, placing her at a significant disadvantage compared to her peers who do not face similar interruptions. I would also like to bring to your attention Bahati's 504/IEP plan, which is available in her student health portal at Bishop Gorman High School. This plan outlines her special accommodation needs arising from her disability and is crucial for understanding her unique circumstances. I believe it is vital for us to consider these accommodations to support her learning and assessment processes, particularly considering her added health challenges as a liver transplant recipient. In situations where Bahati is unable to take a scheduled assessment due to her medical condition, I will ensure that I promptly notify the School Nurse, as I have consistently done, as well as the relevant teacher on that day. I will also provide the necessary documentation from her hospital or doctor to Nurse Young accordingly. I hope this email helps clarify any misunderstandings regarding the unforeseen medical circumstances that may impact Bahati's ability to complete assessments, even when she is physically present on campus. Thank you. Ms. Okojie On Oct 11, 2024, at 12:07 PM, Mary DeJoria wrote: Dear Mrs. Okojie, Good afternoon. We were able to make the schedule change for Bahati from Business Good afternoon. We were able to make the schedule change for Bahati from Business Principles to Study Hall per your request. The plan moving forward is for Bahati to report to Student Services at the start of 6th period and we will have her tests/quizzes for that day ready to go. Mr. Spiritosanto is in the process of reaching out to all of Bahati’s teachers to construct a list of all missing assessments, prioritized by date. Depending on the length of the test/quiz, she may be taking multiple assessments during that study hall. Mr. Spiritosanto will communicate this list with you and Bahati later today so she knows which assessments will be taken on what specific days during study hall. Bahati requested that the assessments be grouped by subject so the administration will determine the order in which the tests will be taken (by subject). When Bahati is present in class, she is expected to take any tests or quizzes at that scheduled time. If Bahati was absent for the class period prior to the quiz and missed new material, then she will be allowed to make up that assessment during study hall. Per the Parent/Student Handbook, students who are only absent the class period prior to an assessment in which no new material was taught (review day) will be expected to take the assessment on its assigned day. When all assessments are current and completed, then Bahati will report to Study Hall. Please let me know if you have any questions or concerns. Have a nice weekend. I am writing to follow up on the meeting held on October 8, 2023, at approximately 2:57 PM, attended by Ms. DeJora, Nurse Young, Mr. Hickman, Mr. Spiritosanto, and my daughter, Bahati Nyaruba. I would like to summarize the key points discussed and express my ongoing concerns regarding Bahati's academic support. During our meeting, we addressed the importance of properly documenting Bahati’s attendance record. It was agreed that her tardiness and absences would be recorded with appropriate reasons, particularly given her medical condition. I would like to emphasize that I should not be receiving automated messages regarding attendance violations, as Bahati has relevant medical documentation available in her student portal at Bishop Gorman High School and with her healthcare provider, Dr. Lasky, who also participated in the meeting via phone and provided valuable insights. Furthermore, I formally requested a modification to Bahati's class schedule, specifically to transition her from Business Principles to Study Hall. This change would serve as a temporary placement that would allow Bahati to stay engaged with her coursework while catching up on missed assignments and tests. During Study Hall, she would have the opportunity to schedule make-up quizzes and tests with a proctor, ensuring she completes them within the same time frame as her peers. This could take place in either the Study Hall classroom, Mr. Spiritosanto’s office (subject to his availability), or the Learning Center, as she is eligible for these accommodations under her 504/IEP plan. We also discussed Bahati's current academic standing. As of October 8, 2024, she has completed the majority of her missing assignments, though a few are still pending grading. Bahati confirmed with Ms. DeJora that her grades do not accurately reflect her work ethic, largely due to uncompleted Medium and High assessments that are currently recorded as zero in her grade book. Despite the challenges she faces in self-learning missed lectures, Bahati remains dedicated to her education, particularly in her Honors Geometry class, which has proven to be particularly challenging. Regrettably, her make-up tests have yet to be completed due to scheduling conflicts between her ongoing medical treatments—occurring two to three times weekly—(upon dismissal) and Mr. Spiritosanto’s availability. An example of this situation is her Honors Geometry make-up quiz, for which she did not have enough time to finish and did not receive a response after reaching out to her teacher. As of today, I am concerned that no concrete plan has been established to enable Bahati to complete her make-up assessments without interferring with her class lectures during her time at school and/or her ongoing medical treatments after school hours. Thank you for your time. Thank you for your time. Unfortunately, it is not possible to grant a schedule change currently. When a schedule change is granted, the student is required to make up all the coursework previously missed in that class. Since this is currently the eleventh week of school, making up all the coursework is not feasible. In addition to the make-up work, on page 18 of the Parent/Student Handbook, any student who drops to a lower level of a course (e.g. honors to college prep), during a semester will take the grade of record into the new course. At this time, Bahati has at 36% in Honors Geometry and still has two assessments that need to be completed: Chapter 1 test (given to the class on Sept. 23) and Quiz 2.5-2.7 (from Oct. 17). On October 17, Bahati was scheduled to take her make up Chapter 1 exam; however, you emailed stating that, due to medical reasons, Bahati could not take that assessment. Today, Bahati was again scheduled to make up this Chapter 1 exam and she said that she was not prepared to do so (per Mr. Spiritosanto’ s email on October 11, the administration developed a schedule for all of Bahati’s make up assessments – please see the attached schedule as a reference). She is now scheduled to take the Chapter 1 make up test on Monday, October 28 per her conversation with Mr. Goode. Bahati will then need to take the Chapter 2.5-2.7 quiz on Wednesday, October 30. The concern with continuously moving back her math make up tests and quizzes is the upcoming Chapter 2 test scheduled for Monday, October 28. If Bahati has not made up the Chapter 2.5-2.7 quiz by Monday, October 28th, then she will not be prepared to take the Chapter 2 test on Monday, October 28th with the class. This will result in yet another math assessment to complete. Additionally, I wanted to address the part of your email stating that Bahati found it challenging to get extra help from Mr. Nunley. I did speak with Mr. Nunley, and he shared that Bahati has never asked to meet with him before or after school for any additional help. On the one occasion that an arrangement was made for her to take the make up after school, Bahati did not show up to take the assessment. Therefore, I do feel that it is important to refute your statement about Mr. Nunley’s schedule “hindering her ability to catch up on missed lessons, review graded quizzes, and receive the necessary feedback and support in the course.” The focus for the rest of the semester will be for Bahati to make up the remaining assessments and be prepared for final exams. We can revisit the schedule change from Honors Geometry to CP Geometry at the semester. Please let me know if you have any questions. I am writing to follow up on my previous email regarding my daughter, Bahati Nyaruba, who is currently enrolled as a sophomore at Bishop Gorman. As of today, I have not yet received a response, and I would like to reiterate the urgency of my request. As mentioned earlier, I am requesting that Bahati be moved from her current high-level math Honors Geometry class to a lower-level College Preparatory (CP) Geometry class. This request stems from medical and other learning support issues that I previously outlined. It is crucial for Bahati’s academic success that she is placed in an environment that is more conducive to her learning needs. I strongly believe that effective communication is essential, especially when it involves a parent’s concern about their child's academic performance, particularly in cases where a disability is involved, and a 504/IEP is on file. I am hopeful that we can work collaboratively as a team—which includes administrators, teachers, and parents—to ensure that Bahati receives the support she requires to succeed academically. I appreciate your attention to this matter and look forward to your prompt response. Thank you. Best regards, Ms. Okojie On Oct 19, 2024, at 2:21 PM, joan okojie wrote: Dear Ms. DeJera, I am reaching out to address an urgent issue concerning my daughter, Bahati Nyaruba, who is currently a sophomore at Bishop Gorman High School. As you may know, Bahati has been struggling in her Honors Geometry class, and I would like to formally request her transfer to a lower-level math course, specifically College Preparatory (CP) Geometry. Regrettably, Bahati's performance in Honors Geometry assessments so far has been below average, which has become a growing concern for us. Due to her ongoing health issues, she has missed several important lectures and assessment preparations. Specifically, she was absent during her recent hospitalizations and did not fully attend classes while receiving medical care on the following days: August 21, August 23, September 3, September 17, and October 17, 2024. Despite her attempts to self-teach and keep pace with the Honors Geometry curriculum, Bahati has found it increasingly difficult to stay on track. Her recent assessment results have shown a decline, particularly on the assessment results have shown a decline, particularly on the 1.3-1.5 and 2.2-2.4 quizzes from September 9 and October 1, respectively, as well as on the Quiz 1.6, 1.7, and 2.1 on October 15, 2024. Furthermore, arranging meetings with her math teacher, Mr. Nunley, for extra help has proven challenging due to her morning medication schedule and conflicting availability with Mr. Nunley's schedule after school. This has further hindered her ability to catch up on missed lessons, review graded quizzes, and receive the necessary feedback and support in the course. In her freshman year, Bahati excelled in Algebra 1 with an A, which led us to believe she was ready for the rigors of Honors Geometry. Given the current circumstances, it has become increasingly evident that staying in Honors Geometry is not in Bahati's best interest, as the course requires a level of commitment that she is presently unable to manage. As the semester progresses and the math concepts become more complex, I worry that her difficulties will only worsen. Transitioning her to CP Geometry would allow her to concentrate on mastering the foundational concepts at a pace better suited to her situation. Bahati has always demonstrated a strong commitment to academic excellence, consistently earning straight A's throughout her elementary and middle school years, as well as her freshman year at Bishop Gorman High School. It is disheartening to witness her struggle in Honors Geometry despite her efforts, especially in a subject that many students find challenging even under optimal conditions. I believe that moving Bahati to CP Geometry will provide her with the best chance for success and help her regain her motivation and confidence in math. motivation and confidence in math. Thank you for your attention to this matter. Sincerely, Ms. Okojie.
