ELEMENTS OF A COMPUTER (SOFTWARE) SOFTWARE •Refers to the set of instructions that tells the computer what to do and how to do it. •It consists of complex codes known as programs. TYPES OF PROGRAMS 1. Word Processing Programs • - used for creating text – based documents, such as letters and reports. 2. Spreadsheet Programs • -for creating numeric-based documents, such as grading sheets and budgets. 3. Presentation Programs - For creating and presenting electronic slide shows. •4. Graphic Programs • - for designing and manipulating images. •5. Desktop Publishing Programs • - For creating publications, such as books, newsletters, and brochures •6. Entertainment and Education Programs • - for playing games, music, videos, electronic encyclopedias, and tutorials • 7. Database Management Programs • - for building and manipulating large sets of data, such as school records and lists of addresses. OPERATING SYSTEM • OS controls how the CPU communicates with the other parts of the computer. • It tells your computer how to run itself and other programs as well. • It makes operating computers easier for people who do not understand programming languages. • In other words, operating system make computers user-friendly. Types of Operating System • WINDOWS, developed by Microsoft Corporation - it has a graphical user interface (GUI), a user interacts with the computer through icons and menus and does not need to remember and type text anymore. •Macintosh, Mac OS - is the computer operating system for Apple Computer's Macintosh line of personal computers and workstations. A popular feature of its latest version, Mac OS X , is a desktop interface with some 3-D appearance characteristics. FREEWARE • Freeware is software that is available for use at no monetary cost. In other words, while freeware may be used without payment it is most often proprietary software, as usually modification, re-distribution or reverse-engineering without the author's permission is prohibited. • Popular examples of closed-source freewareinclude Adobe Reader, Free Studio and Skype • Other examples are GIMP, Open Office
