E-EDUC 215 Assessment in Learning =========================================== Module 1 =========================================== Definition of Terms: Assessment Measurement Evaluation Test CRISTINA M. PADILLA PFD Faculty Page 1 of 7 Abstraction (Lesson Proper and Learning Activities) Let us now define Assessment and the three important terminologies related to it: Measurement, Evaluation and Test. DEFINITION OF TERMS What is Assessment? 1. Assessment is a means of knowing the state of student learning in terms of what he knows and can do with reference to the purpose of the learning tasks and objectives (Buenaflor, 2012). Assessment is a way, a method or procedure that can be used to determine the current status of students’ learning and knowledge and how they utilize this learning and knowledge in real-life situations. The teacher should always refer to the lesson’s objectives to ensure that students acquire the right kind of knowledge and skills that they need to learn. In that way, the teacher can determine the students’ status of learning – whether he has learned and made some advancement or otherwise (CHANGE IN BEHAVIOR/CHARACTERISTICS). 2. Assessment is the variety of methods used to determine what students know and are able to do before, during and after instruction. (Green and Johnson, 2010 in Buenafor, 2012) There is NO one way by which assessment can best be done. Instead there are a variety of ways by which assessment can be done in order to determine students’ knowledge, skill and attitude (KSA) and how they can use these KSA in real-life situations. Moreover, assessment is not only done at the end or towards the end of a quarter, term or semester, rather it is an ongoing process that might take place anytime as the need arises. This should happen particularly in the classroom during the teacher’s delivery of the lesson. The teacher should be sensitive enough to determine whether he needs to perform assessment before the instruction, during the instruction or after the instruction. Page 2 of 7 3. Assessment secures data or measures that reflect student progress and success or failures in instruction (Buenaflor, 2012). The word secure means to collect or gather. Through assessment, the teacher can collect or gather students’ scores that will reflect his progress, success or failure during the instruction or even during the entire quarter, term or semester. An example of this is: 35 out of 50 students got a passing score in a test. 4. Assessment is also a way or method of evaluating a learner’s personality which refers to a learner’s characteristics. These are the cognitive, affective and psychomotor aspects of the learner’s characteristics. Through assessment, the teacher should be able to tell whether the student has made marked CHANGES in his cognitive, affective and psychomotor aspects. 5. Assessment is the process by which evidence of student achievement is obtained and evaluated. This evidence can take an infinite variety of forms, from traditional closed-book examinations to real- life projects carried out within a work setting (Bandiola, 2003). Assessment tools come in a variety of forms. These can be either traditional or authentic. An example of a traditional assessment is a major exam while real-life projects such as working on a research project is an example of authentic assessment. Page 3 of 7 What is Measurement? 1. Measurement: - is one way of making an assessment (Bandiola, 2003). - is the assignment of numbers to the individual’s intelligence, personality, attitudes and values and achievements (Gabuyo, 2012). - expresses the assessment data in terms of numerical values and answer the question “how much?” as in “How much change has occurred in the student’s behavior?’” (Gabuyo, 2012). - may use a variety of instruments such as tests, rating scales and checklists (Bandiola, 2003). Example: A mark of 9 out 10 in a 10-item quiz on subject and verb agreement is undertaking measurement of what was learned by the students in this lesson. What is Evaluation? 1. In general, Evaluation is about programs, institutions and policies (Bandiola, 2003). 2. Evaluation is used for the following: - appraisal of the school program - appraisal of curriculum and instructional materials - appraisal of teachers and appraisal of students (Bandiola, 2003). 3. Evaluation in Instruction/Teaching or Educational Evaluation When a teacher assigns a grade to a performance such as a research paper or a role play and he places a value on the information gathered - this is an Evaluative Act. Why is this so? Because the teacher has rendered or made a judgement on the worth or quality of the information he gathered. This means that in the evaluation process, the teacher should be able to tell whether the student’s output or performance is good and desirable or otherwise. What is a Test? (Gabuyo, 2012) 1. A test is a formal and systematic instrument/tool. 2. Usually a paper and pencil procedure designed to assess the quality, ability, skill or knowledge of the students by giving a set of questions in uniform manner. 3. A test is one of the many types of assessment procedure used to gather information about the performance of students. Page 4 of 7 After looking closely into the definition of Assessment, Measurement and Evaluations, what do you think is the relationship between and among these three concepts? The relationship between and among the three concepts can be clearly displayed through this diagram. ✓ Assessment utilizes measurement to express assessment data in terms of numerical value. ✓ Assessment of students is a typical component of an educational evaluation. ✓ Evaluation is a process of making measurement and uses the results of assessment for decision-making. ✓ Assessment therefore, is a prerequisite of evaluation. However, assessment can stand by itself without evaluation. ✓ Measurement is an integral component of Assessment and Evaluation.
