# Lesson 3: Common Electrical Symbols ## Technical Terms: - **Fixture:** Electrical material used as lighting accessory to enhance the effect of light. - **Outlet:** Commonly used term for convenience outlet; this is where the plug of an appliance is inserted to acquire electrical current. - **Pictogram:** Small pictographic representation for an expression, sketch, or drawing. - **Raceway:** Covered channel made of either metallic or non-metallic material designed to hold and protect wires and cables. - **Schematic:** Presentation of the electrical circuit using electrical symbols. ## Wiring Symbols - **Conduit:** A tube or pipe that protects electrical wires and cables. - **Emergency:** An electrical circuit that is used in emergencies, such as a power outage. - **Fire Alarm:** An electrical circuit that is used to sound an alarm in case of fire. - **Closed-Circuit Television (CCTV):** A system of cameras and monitors that are used to observe a particular area. - **Music:** An electrical circuit that is used to power a music system. ## Introduction - **Electrical Symbols:** Pictograms used to correspond with various electrical devices and materials found in an electrical wiring diagram and electrical wiring plan. - They are used in drawing schematic diagrams and electrical wiring plans for several types of electrical works. Any electrical fixture found in a house has a symbol that coincides to said fixture on an electrical wiring plan, such as convenience outlets, fluorescent lamp outlets, ceiling fan, switches, among others. - These symbols are very helpful guides for an electrician, master electrician, or electrical contractor, making electrical wiring plan reading and interpretation easier and quicker for wiring installations. ## Universal Electrical Symbols - **Lightning Arrester:** A device that protects electrical equipment from damage caused by lightning strikes. - **Surge Arrester:** A device that protects electrical equipment from damage caused by surges in electrical current. - **Circuit Breaker:** A device that automatically interrupts an electrical circuit in case of a fault. - **Fuse:** A device that melts and breaks a circuit when too much current flows through it. - **Ground (Earth):** A connection to the earth that provides a safe path for electricity to follow in case of a fault. - **Light Panel Board:** A panel that contains fuses or circuit breakers for the lighting circuits in a building. - **Power Panel Board:** A panel that contains fuses or circuit breakers for the power circuits in a building. - **Safety Switch:** A switch that is used to disconnect a circuit from the power source. - **Disconnected Switch:** A switch that is in the "off" position. - **Kilowatt-hour Meter:** A meter that measures the amount of electricity consumed by a customer. ## Alarm System - **SD:** Smoke detector. - **FD:** Flame detector. - **HD:** Heat detector. - **F:** Manual. - **FACP:** Control Panel. ## Outlets - **Incandescent Lamp** - **Lamp Outlet with Pull Switch** - **Intercom** - **Drop Cord Lamp** - **Single Convenience Outlet** - **Duplex Convenience Outlet** - **Fluorescent Lamp** - **Push Button** - **Junction Box** - **Ammeter:** A device that measures the amount of electric current flowing through a circuit. - **Voltmeter:** A device that measures the electric potential difference between two points in a circuit. - **GFCI:** Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter. A device that protects people from electric shock by interrupting the flow of electricity in case of a ground fault. ## Switches - **S or S1:** Single-pole switch. - **S2:** Duplex switch. - **S3:** Triplex switch. - **S2P:** Double-pole switch. - **S3W:** Three-way switch. - **SRC:** Remote control switch. - **SM:** Master selector switch. - **SK:** Key operated switch. - **SAD:** Automatic door switch. - **S4W:** Four-way switch.
