The importance of studying ethical and legal issues for nurses. Introduction During the last decade, the health care system has undergone fundamental changes. The changes have made health care more complexes and ethics has increasingly become a required component of clinical practice. Nurses face many legal and ethical issues while providing patient care and it is essential to understand the law and the way it affects the nursing practice. Within a health care team, nurses have the major responsibilities of including provision of care, making decision and maintaining confidentiality of the patient. With advanced technology, nurses can be confronted with the legal and ethical issues during their work. Definitions of ethics Ethics is the discipline that deals with the rightness and wrongness of actions. Ethics are declarations of what is right or wrong and what ought to beي نبغياني كون. Ethics, which are usually presented as systems of valued behaviors and beliefs, govern conduct ت حكما لسلوكto ensure that individuals’ rights are protected. Goal of ethics :- The goal of ethics is similar to that of the legal system, except that in most cases there is no system of enforcement or ethical guidelines. Ideally, the ethical system is more inclusive and usually exceeds the legal system in the situations it covers. In practice, particularly where health care is concerned, law and ethics overlap in many areas. These areas include, but are not limited to, such issues as death, dying, birth, abortion, quality of life, breach of duty ا الخال ب, allocation of medical services, and violations ا النتهاكof ل ا لواجب others’ rights. Level of ethics Ethics exist on several levels, ranging from the individual or small group to the society as a whole. Definition of Laws Laws are rules ق واعدmade by human beings to guide society and regulate human interactions. Laws usually have a sanctioned عقاباو ي ع اقبmethod of enforcement, such as the police. Laws are based on concerns for fairness and justice. ا النصافوا لع دا له Goal of laws Promote peaceful and productive interactions between individuals or groups of individuals. Laws protect our general safety. Definition of Values Values are ideals or concepts that give meaning to an individual’s life. Values are most commonly derived from societal norms, religion, and family orientation and serve as the framework for making decisions and taking certain actions in everyday life. Value conflicts often occur in everyday life and can force an individual to select a higher priority value over a lower priority value. For example, nurses who value both their career and their family may be forced to decide between going to work or staying home with a sick child. Definition of Morals Morals are the fundamental standards of right and wrong that an individual learns and internalizesي ستوعب, usually in the early stages of childhood development. An individual’s moral orientation is often based on religious beliefs, and societal influence plays an important part in this development. Specific beliefs, behaviors and ways of being derived from doing ethics.Or Are what you believe to be right and wrong, example: always tell the truth ق لا لحقيقه, keep your promises , do not judge. The Nurse’s Ethical Responsibilities: - Nurses have four fundamental responsibilities: To promote health. To prevent illness. To restore health. Alleviate suffering. Definition of Ethical Dilemmas A dilemma is defined as a situation requiring a choice between two equally desirable or undesirable alternatives. Examples- Too many patients but scarce ن
