DENT 4406-Dental Photography History and Definition of Dental Photography Dr. Gülşilay SAYAR, DDS,PhD Associate Professor Bahçeşehir University School of Dental Medicine Department of Orthodontics [email protected] Dental Photography The history of dentistry and photography began in 1840 when the first dental school was opened, and the world's first photographic gallery was opened and operated by a dentist turned photographer. Since that time, photography and dentistry have been partners as photography has become an integral part of a patient's record and treatment plan. The specialty of orthodontics has led the way in this model of recording patient data. Dental Photography Alexander Wolcott (1804–1844) was a pioneer in the field of photography. In 1840, he received a patent for his camera inventions and devised a system for photographic studio lighting. He created history by founding the first commercial photographic studio in less than a month later. Dental Photography W Elde of Columbus and R Thompson used before and a after images of dental procedures for the first time in 1948 and an article was published ushering in a new era. Dental Photography Why Dentists utilize dental photography: Dental photography has now become simpler and more convenient, with the emergence of newer technologies. Dental practice is not just about the dental practice, as experienced dentists understand; it's also about persuading patients and avoiding legal complications. Whether you've been practicing for a while or are just getting started, one thing remains constant: the significance of documentation. Dental Photography Dental Photography Improved patient communication and education A demonstration on dental operations could be prepared utilizing filmed cases, electronic display and PowerPoint presentation. These specific images of surgical steps, anatomy, finished cases and materials can aid in patient education about the diagnosis and suggested therapy, boosting their understanding and acceptance of the procedure Dental Photography Dental Photography Consultation with an expert: The only way to present our patients to other clinicians was through charted radiographs and written reports. With the use of images, a completely new dimension has been established. An over the phone consultation with an expert may be sufficient with a comprehensive case history and high resolution pictures . Similarly, images of mutual patients and their recent achievements from the referring dentist might be transferred or received so that the operator could analyses the situation without having to be physically present in the office Dental Photography Communication inside the laboratory: A shade guide is often used to convey information regarding the character, shade, or color of teeth or gingiva This technique has a number of drawbacks, including a failure to adequately describe the shadowing and depth that a tooth reveals. As a result, a color corrected photograph can be used to construct a final prosthesis with mo re precise dimensions of color. Dental Photography Advertising and marketing by professionals: Pre and post-operative images are effective motivators for patients to accept treatment plans or to demonstrate a certain talent. Dental Photography Professional guidance: When it comes to discussing dental ideas or specific surgical procedures, words and bullets are frequently insufficient. A picture is worth a thousand words and generates more attention and debate than handwritten content. Dental Photography Work ethic and treatment philosophy: Cleaning surgical sites for pictures takes time and energy, and it requires endurance and meticulous attention. This mentality motivates us to complete our work with extreme precision. As a result, preparing the patient for pictures helps us increase our own abilities. Dental Photography Most dental patients in the last two decades have seen pictures of the inside of their mouth. Dental Photography Cameras ranging in type are a staple in almost every dental practice regardless of specialty. Dental Photography However, many years ago, that was not the case, there was x-ray, but nothing that a patient could understand. Dental Photography Over half a century ago, dentists began searching for a photographic device that could allow patients to see what dentists see. Dental Photography Nonetheless, even with the growth of conventional film photography, there was still a massive roadblock to taking dental pictures. Dental Photography There was no apparent way to get light from the camera’s flash inside the dark cavern of the mouth. Dental Photography Back then, the technology of close-up lenses was capable of photographing a close-up picture of an intra-oral subject. Dental Photography Nevertheless, getting light into the mouth to take the picture was another story. Dental Photography With close-up photography, the lens was often inches from the subject. This light projecting from the camera body could not disperse fast enough to pass enough light deep inside the mouth. Therefore, the concept of dental photography was only for facial photography. Dental Photography In 1952, the invention of a circular flash attached to the end of the camera’s lens made it possible to pinpoint light into the patient’s mouth. It provided full illumination from external anterior to posterior intra-oral quadrant pictures. Dental Photography This invention revolutionized the concept of dentistpatient communication. Now through photography, a patient could see what a dentist could see and understand the importance of treatment. Dental Photography Dental photography then became a teaching tool, changing the way for future dentists in school and educating patients. Developments in the field now have photographic documentation used in presentations. Dental Photography As the popularity of dental photography grew through the 60’s and into the 70’s, a limitation of 35mm filmbased photography became clear. Dental Photography The dentist could take photographs of the patient, though they could not review those pictures until the development of the film. Moreover, with elements of human and mechanical error, there was no way also to ensure that the developed photos would represent the case. Dental Photography The need for immediate photographic results came about with the development of instant film cameras. Dental Photography Instant cameras offered the user the ability to take a photograph and see results within a couple of minutes. The cameras could take a picture and process it to a film inside the camera. Dental Photography In the 80’s, computers started to take a more significant function in a dental office. The first foray into computerized picture taking was with intraoral video cameras. These cameras were revolutionary in many ways. Dental Photography The intraoral video cameras’ design is similar to a wand that is narrow enough to use inside the patient’s mouth. With its video feature, the patient could look inside their mouth live, in real time. The dentist could point the small video camera at a particular tooth or segment of the mouth and discuss treatment plans. Dental Photography With the improvement of computers, the dentist could now import the images to cosmetic imaging programs. With the art of cosmetic dentistry growing, this form of imaging was instrumental in selling cases. Dentists can show patients before and after pictures of other patients, and potential changes that could affect the way they look. Thank you...
